St Petersburg, recommended Imperial highlights
DOMOVOII:
Hi to all, it really is encouraging to find so much interest and information. Having had the "bug" for what seems like many years I am now in a position to go and see for myself all the palaces and places that have captured my imagination for so long.
What I'd like to know is what other members would recommend as to the most pertinent places to see beyond the given tours, Alexander/Winter/Catherine Palaces. I do hope you can help

Glebb:
Pavlovsk, Gatchina, Peterhof, Peter and Paul Fortress, Hermitage Museum and Theatre (in the Winter Palace), Nevsky Prospect.

The Yussupov palace is very interesting, and I really love to visit the cemetary at the Alexander Nevsky monastery---lots of famous people and cool monuments there (Rimsky-Korsakov, Petipa, etc.) One of the cooler "Soviet" sights is the WWII/seige memorial. One of the best views of the city is the view from the top of the St. Issac Cathedral---you can climb to the base of the dome.

Hello Domovoii
Will you may be staying at the Astoria Hotel? Along Bolshaya Morskaya ulitsa is the House of Faberge at no 24 and Vladimir Nabokov's house at no. 47. There are many hidden gems throughout the city! A beautiful guidebook is Eyewitness Guide for St. Petersburg. And when visiting the Alexander and Catherine Palaces in Tsarskoye Selo, there is also the Pushkin dacha, Znamenia Church, a local history museum and much more!
Have a beautiful trip !
Joanna

Hi Domovoii
It would be interesting to know if you are with a tour or on an independent visit. If on a tour you may be restricted by the tour itinerary but if you are able to pick your destinations I would highly recommend you walk along the streets of St. Petersburg - get maps etc. of course. Oh, and take the subway - it is fascinating. And check out the bookstore in the Singer building on the Nevsky Prospek.
I would love to be travelling there again.
Cathy
