Folks - Probably many of you have seen this already, but today I stumbled across an article (and great pictures) of the reburial of Empress Marie from the Romanov Family Association Web site.  For those who haven't seen this and are interested in the topic - this site is worth a look.

Happy Holidays

Yes, thank you. I had not seen those pictures. I rarely check that site as it seems so rarely updated.

It was a moving experience to see Marie Feodorovna's final resting place in the Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral.  The guide hardly mentioned the tomb, but as soon as I saw her picture I knew.  Alexander III is buried behind her tomb.

Hi,

My goodness, when I was there last August, there was no picture on her tomb and we were not allowed to place flowers on it.
Things must have changed;  or maybe this was a special day, as I see several people in the background.  There weren't that many there the day I was there.

I am not really sure why there were flowers and a picture at her tomb that particular day.  It was October 28, 2008, which I don't think was a special date.

April/May 2008 - there was no picture on the grave however there were flowers in vases at or near most of the graves. But I do not think that they were left by the 'tourists' - I think that the placement of 'tributes' is carefully orchestrated by the staff. All very tasteful actually. And we were almost alone in the church so were able to 'grieve' in peace. Nice.

Hi,

October 28, 2008 -
The Dowager Empress died in Denmark on October 13, 1928, so this could be a tribute to her 80th anniversary of her death.  Isn't the Julian calendar 15 days behind the Gregorian??

Just my guess!!

The flowers and picture were still there when I visited last week of November, 2008.  I did over hear a guide explain to a group tour who she was.

Well...Not all tragic. She had a great marriage with Sasha, something her sisters (especially Alix) can only envy.

Her marriage lasted 28 years, which is short taking into consideration than she and the emperor married young.

The worst that can happen to a parent is the death of a child, let alone four sons, her husband at a relatively young age (49), even at that time and five of her grandchildren were murdered, not to mention her first fiancĂ©.

She lost her house, her wealth, and a country she learned to love to what became a rogue state.

Indeed she had good moments with her family, for the time they lasted, but in summary I think there's little to envy there.

In any case she is buried now next to her husband; the mystery of what happened with Nicholas II's and his family's remains is now solved, so I hope she'll rest in peace.

I'm not sure any of us is qualified to make such a determination.

She certainly had some happy times in childhood, in marriage, and even in widowhood. She also had much tragedy - the loss of her husband at a young age and outliving so many of her children.

The brutal way she was treated by Russia after the Revolution.

All in all, I think her life was a difficult one, but that's just my opinion.

By tragic I meant the death of Nicholas, her grandchildren and so many of her relatives. Loss of home , status, wealth and country. One cannot imagine what she must have felt in all of this.
