In St. Louis we were lucky enough to have a Russian Imperial Artifacts exhibit several years ago at our history museum.

One of the things that stood out in my mind was the dress of Marie Feodorvna, that she wore upon arriving in Russia or at a dinner that evening.   It was lavender
velvet, with silver, and white satin, of course in the court style, but she was so TINY..

She was diminiutive in height and weight.  I wish I had a photo of the dress.  Both Minny & Aix were known for their style and their ability to wear clothes.

Looking at these pictures, I see that the old photos don't do these gowns justice. When you think they are dressed in a simple manner, you realize they are really dressed up!
I didn't know a skirt could come with an afternoon and evening top! Thanks for the info

I think taht the empress´s portrait in formal drees may be reeddish, because the blue that you can see in Liljones picture dess is like it had been colorized over (I have  a little experience in that, you can see that dress´s frontal part must be white/silver or gold  but the colour is like a light uniform blue. The colour blue is too much uniform in the dress´embroidered part too). And because I allways see that portarit in red colour in different places. :-/

Greetings

One more sketch of the Imperial family.
Here is a painting by M.Zichy portraying a family dinner in Spala in August 1894.

We see Alexander III's back, his spouse MF and Tsesarevitch Nikolay are to his right. In front of Nikolay is GD Georgiy, his brother. To Alexander's left  is sitting GDss Maria Pavlovna-elder. GD Vladimir is coming down the steps.

Portrait by Korzukhin, about 1883.
