True, but wouldn't the high society teach him a thing or two about manners (if i were that rich I can afford A LOT of manners!! ;)), instead of him teaching noble ladies how to undo their corsets! Lol

Sorry today, I am silly, toooo much coffee! :D

What I keep wondering is what influence Alexandra PoW/Queen Alexandra had over her sister.  Did she ever try to coax Marie to be gentler toward Alix?  Alexandra seemed to have an affectionate relationship with Alix, judging from some of the family photos, and one would think she would have good will toward her, given that Alix's own mother saved her husband's (Bertie's) life.  Yet it just sounds as though Alexandra kept her distance as Marie and Alix's relationship worstened.

Alix (POW later Queen) had a good relationship with the Hesse family generally, but she was not especially close to Alicky (Princess Alix), who was very shy and introverted. Of the two sisters, Dagmar was more bossy than her scatterbrained but beautiful sister. However during the early part of the marriage, Alix stayed on in Russia to comfort her younger sister, and relations between the in-laws were on the surface not too bad. It was after Alix left Russia then Dagmar & Alicky began to have serious disagreements. Both women were pocessive of Nicky, who was torn between mother and wife.

Inexperienced....*lol* a 22 year old woman becoming Empress of all the Russians. Considering all and everything she did and tried to do for her people and how disgusting she was treated by many and the most tragic fate of giving birth to one son suffering from an incurable disease... I cannot stop wondering how one is able to prefer the idle, superficial and not really well-read Dowager Empress...

People often do prefer the superficial- it is easier to deal with. People prefered Marie Feodorovna because she was active in Russian society and played out the social role of the Empress well. She was more like most of the Russian court than Alexandra, and easier to understand, and presented a good public image. Alexandra didn't fit in as well with the Russian court, did not fill the social role of Empress well, and was defintely a deeper more interesting person than MF, but people didn't see or appreciate that. She had real public image problems. MF had tragedies in her life too, she just dealt with them differently than Alexandra. Her infant son died, another son died as a young man, another son made an unsuitable marriage ( Michael), and her husband did die young, and of course she was engaged first to Alexander III's older brother who died, then Alexander. People say Alexandra's early life was surrounded by death and tragedy- true enough. But, MF also had enough death and tragedy in her life, perhaps just as much or more than Alexandra's- thanks to Jehan for making that point. I would say, MF dealt with the tragedies that happened to her better than Alexandra. MF was more resilient. She had a different personality, and did not let these tragedies ruin her health or life. Alexandra was more affected by her tragedies,I suppose because she was more sensitive. So I feel you have to admire how MF dealt with the tragedies in her life, more than you can admire Alexandra's way of coping. MF was a more superficial person than Alexandra, but in the end when dealing with life, that served her well.

Well said. MF was a practical woman who knew what had to be done. Alicky sometimes just turn away from unpleseantness, while her mother-in-law dealt with it head on.

I agree with Eric, I think the root of this is Marie talent with social affairs.

Indeed. Alexander III was a rough man, Minny was able to polish through the edges. She made people welcome to court and some semblence of solidarity within the Romanov family.

Is well known that Marie Feodorovna didn't like that Alix could become her daughter in law,
but she did.

do we know in what way was Alix considered unsuitable to be a future empress while visiting her sister in russia?

as for the rest, I believe noone can help someone who doesn't want to be helped. Alix always thought she was right - and that was her mistake. her hasbunt was a weak - and that was his big problem. the rest of their family had no options.
