The new baby girl occupies the ninth place in the Spanish line of succession.  Her godaprents will be princess Rosario of Bulgaria and don Pedro Lópz-quesada, husband of Princess Cristina of Bourbon and the Two Sicilies.

I assume she was named after her great-aunt, Princess Irene of Greece?

Yes, that and because they like it and because it means "peace" in Greek

I saw Iñaki on the TV last night and he made no mention of Irene of Greece. He said they just liked the name. Also he said it was Irene "a Secas" unlike her brothers who have two names!

Yeah, but he also said that when they firstborn came to the world, and then they desided to give him two names anyway. So nothing is written in stone.

Apparently since their marriage they always had Irene chosen as a name for their daughter.
It is supposed that Sofia will be chosen if a daughter is born to the Principes of Asturias to honour the Queen.

I'd never heard of that. It's a pretty name and also a family name. I had thought though that Princess Irene of Greece would be the godmother of her namesake, but not being Catholic she might not be allowed to be the child's godmother.
I actually thought they'd call ehr irene or Isabel... Sofia is too "near", and there's already a Federica/Victoria... maybe Eugenia? I wonder what the Princes of Asturias will call their child? I hope it'd not Pelayo like some seem to think!!!!
