If you ask me, none of them look too pleased.

Please just post links. They're large pictures.

People back then generally didn't smile for photographs; there aren't very many photos I've seen of Anastasia smiling.  She either was pulling a face or looking angry or serious.  Olga smiled the most.

I saw many IF photos, and let me said that the only one that almost NEVER smiles was Alix. The girls and Alexei, even the Emperor are the smiling tipe. It's a fake thing that "people didn't smile back then". People seems to think that laughing, jolly etc are modern inventions, and they were not!  :) Of course, in an official photo, you don't smile, even today...

And well; some Alix photographies show her smiling and even laughing openly! There is a thread in "Alexandra Feodorovna" forum with many of these photos.

Anastasia liked to "play the clown" and to make faces to the camera. Many of her snapshots show them making fun, or making as if she was angry when she was not.

However, in this one, all children seems to be a bit bored or something like this.

What year were those pics taken?  1912? 1913?

My guess is that the children, after being asked to march around for the cameras (there's film footage of them doing so) were perhaps not quite in a mood to smile. The two eldest are looking no more than dutiful, while clearly Marie and Anastasia are not happy, and Alexei seems merely complacent. It's also possible they were out of sorts re: the sad reason behind the White Flower Festival . . . or maybe they just wanted to romp that fine sunny morning. Livadia was supposed to be a vacation place, but they were being expected to work that day and set an example!

It's not true that Anastasia didn't smile much for photographs...

Well, most of the photographs you posted were nonformal, while the While Flower Festival ones were.  Sometimes it took a while for them to get in the right spots to look good, get the camera set up, ect., ect.  And by then, they are probably quite tired of smiling.  Imagine having to hold those staffs and carry those camera's around your neck all day!

Wasn't the White Flower Festival a money making event for charity> The Empress and court ladies sold handiwork they'd made...and I imagine the children were drafted into tedious projects...Are those boxes for money that they might have had to ask folk for?....Kids would likely hate that.....

No, I'm pretty sure that it's their camera's.

The White Flower Festival was Empress Alexandra's personal annual fundraising event in Yalta.  The photo was taken  at Livadia Palace before they left for the festival.  Those boxes are not cameras, they are collection boxes.  They sold those little paper flowers (which they made themselves) individually and put the money into the box. They all loved going to these events, remember it was one of their few opportunities to be out among "real people". I suspect they look glum because they are eager to be on their way and are cross that Anya V. is making them pose formally for all of her pictures and delaying their leaving.  "Anya Alexandrovna, can't we just GO! no more pictures, please...."
