Irina, try to put 'smoking' in Search section, and you will find many threads and photos about it -- and I have never seen also Maria smoking.

That´s just it. If Nena didn´t see it, no one on this board probably has :)

If you look very carefully, you'll see Maria holding a cigarette in her left hand:

Possibly also this photo, too:

Yes, she holding cigarettes, but don't smoke(in those photos). Thank you. I think those cigarretes weren't dangerous for their health. Just to calm their nerves.

Aleksei (I know topic is in Maria's thread, but about showing teeth):

..... yes could be a gap -

but it could also be  a " Buck tooth" on the  Front top right tooth ( in this case the tooth would not  be straight but is angled in ) -  thus tending to  creating a shadow on that tooth as  the light is coming from such an oblique angle.

I would like to view the original photo to get a better look
to that effect - I have had a look through the Yale Beinecke collection but couldn't find it  - maybe I missed it?

Does anyone know for sure where the photo comes from?

A "buck" tooth is a tooth that protrudes outward -  not one that's angled to either side. My left front tooth is angled to the left (the side of it closest to my right front tooth sits just in front of the right front tooth, and the other side sits back just behind the lateral incisor). It makes me appear to have a gap between my front teeth, but it isn't a "buck" tooth.

Well...Nature is there for something, I think. My granny never smoke, nor drink and has no more than the lower part of her teeth set semi- complete. She must have to change almost all her upper teeth for false ones. My grandpa, her husband, was a smoker, a man who likes to drink -without being a drunkard for it and adding to it, a diabetic, an illness that is very well known to waste your teeth away. Well..He died with all his teeth in their sites. He must not replace  single one of them. And he died at 87, from penumonia...His wife is still alive at 86, but few original teeth of herself still remains!  :(

That's mostly because we know now what smoking does to your health. At the time OTMA was smoking, people thought it was about as harmful as eating chocolate or drinking coffee -- a "harmless" pleasure for adults. Also, there was virtually no social stigma attached to smoking (although some viewed it as unladylike).

No. Unless you see them as perfect flawless creatures. But no such creature exists.

you both make very interesting points, thank-you. i guess i feel that way because i thought that it was "un-lady-like" to smoke in that period in history and like GD Ally pointed out no perfect creature exists but never mind  :)

Smoking was some sort of medicine in the 19... None of the grand daughters and the people in Russia knew how bad this was  for the health... It was modern to smoke... And people who had enough money for that extra got little given... I believe you feel "bit let down" ,because you see them innocence creatures... But they were normal people with desires, longing and many more feelings... For them it was normal and for you this have to become normal, just have to accept what 19 century was :)

Thank- you Irina, I guess it's just when you hold someone in a very high opinion, you want then to be flawless. But now I know that OTMA were normal, down to earth people - just like you and me, I think I have a greater respect for them  and it's thanks to you guys ,Sarushka, Grand Duchess Ally and IrinaAlexandrovna.

Thank-you  :)
