Indeed, they sometimes look older or younger than their real age on some photos.

Reading the extract from Spiridovitch's book where he mentions his little girl Xenia at the flower festival. This saddened me as I know Xenia ended up taking her own life by drowning.

I'd guess it's Maria too. Although she looked like Anastasia to me when I first saw the picture, I think it looks more like Maria. :-\

Thanks for clearing it out. I always thought it's Maria. We can see she's showing a bit of her teeth there!

:)  I can't leave this topic without wrapping up a couple of things: one has to do with teeth and the identification of Maria. In the Ekaterinburg morgue the guide told me that Maria's body was missing based on the fact that Maria DID NOT have a space between her front teeth; a skull was in the morgue with a space between its teeth which they wrongfully attributed to Anastasia--see the three girls in striped shirts playing on a swing. Also please remember each child had to go through the snaggle toothed period--which thank goodness is temporary.

The Tsar didn't take care of his teeth or gums as demonstrated by his skull.

Smoking and tanning were in style early in the century--Alexandra didn't understand why the girls would want to tan but didn't oppose it. Surprisingly, the girls would cadge cigarettes off of their father--he was a chain smoker. There are photos of the girls resting in a haystack and smoking.

I haven't read the other posts so sorry if I'm copying someone, but I have seen 1 photo of Maria playing tennis showing her teeth. All of the Grand Duchesses, except for Tatiana, I think, had rather large gaps between their 2 front teeth, but I don't think that's why.

It WAS considered improper to smile with your teeth showing back then, or, at least for royalty. I'd read once that Alexandra never smiled at all in public. I honestly don't know why this is, but I think for OTMA the Monalisa smile looks very elegant on them in formal shots.

This is the picture I meant:

Hope this helps!

Being a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, Alix was taught from a young age to look somber in photographs. However, if you look around the the Alexandra Picture threads, you will find pictures of her smiling and occasionally showing her teeth. Also, she rarely smiled in public because she was very shy and probably suffered from some sort of social anxiety disorder and therefore felt uneasy when around people who were not her family or friends. This situation mainly applies to court functions, as Alexandra seemed to have had no problem running her charity bazaars or nursing the wounded soldiers in the hospitals. Oh, and she was also in near constant pain due to her sciatica, which doesn't really make a person feel cheerful when it feels like your back is broken and the skin has been ripped off the backs of your legs.
I'm back on my bull****.
