i think that when Avdonin and Ryabovfound the 3 skulls in 1979. they said that one had gold fillings? we know now that they skulls were of two grand ducheses and Anna Demidova. could the fillings be the GD's or demidova's?

According to Massie's Final Chapter, the skull with the prefabricated gold bridge belonged to Anna Demidova. Alexandra's dental work was done in platinum, porcelain, and gold. Nicholas's skull showed no fillings at all in the remaining teeth. Massie also reports that the GDss all had similar dental work, but doesn't mention the material used. I believe I read elsewhere that the children's fillings were done in silver amalgam.

 Some great photos posted here!!

I particularly like the family group on the tennis court - ... showing the IF having fun with friends - a delightful photo

   1.  Does anyone know where this Photo was sourced - it is one of the few of Maria showing a full smile to the camera

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh145/passions-killing-floor/mteeth.jpg

    2.  It has been said in this thread that Maria had  a  gap between some of her teeth (assume between top front teeth?) - where is the photo showing this?? Or where is that info sourced from??

or is it just hear say?

One of Vyrubova's albums from the Yale Beinecke collection, I believe.

It's actually visible in close-up of the photo you referred to above:

..... yes could be a gap -

but it could also be  a " Buck tooth" on the  Front top right tooth ( in this case the tooth would not  be straight but is angled in ) -  thus tending to  creating a shadow on that tooth as  the light is coming from such an oblique angle.

I would like to view the original photo to get a better look
to that effect - I have had a look through the Yale Beinecke collection but couldn't find it  - maybe I missed it?

Does anyone know for sure where the photo comes from?

There are at least two other threads that show photos illustrating the gaps in the imperial children's teeth. All of them, except perhaps Tatiana, had a gap at one time or another, though Anastasia's and Aleksei's may have disappeared when their adult teeth grew in. If you do a search on "teeth" you'll find them.

Its funny because the Russians said that none of the skeletons found in 1991 (1992?) Could be Maria's because none of them showed a gap in the front teeth, but you can clearly see that the gap in Anastasia's teeth in this photo: http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh145/passions-killing-floor/tma.jpg (click to enlarge) Which means that based solely on 'gaps in teeth', the remains of the grand duchess found in 2007 could just as well be Anastasia's.

I think Russians used facial reconstructions for identify the remains. By the way, all the children had gaps in teeth. Also, they said remains belong to Grand Duchess Maria, because of age of remains, ca. 19.

Cavities? Yes -- many. It seems the imperial children was quite fond of sweets. In the days before flouride, that means lots of cavities.

Dentistry at that time was fully able to deal with cavities and other repairs. The imperial children had silver amalgam fillings, and the empress's dental work was done in platinum, porcelain, and gold. Dr. Botkn wore dentures, and Anna Demidova had a prefabricated gold bridge.
