Europe was being devastated by a cruel and deadly war, but Portugal, who had remained neutral, was turning into a desirable destination for thousands of refugees who wanted to escape the horrors of Nazi Germany. Among them, there were princes, kings without a crown and members of the great European Monarchies who found a royal refuge in Portugal. In 1940, Wallis Simpson and the Duke of Windsor, along with King Carol of Romania, who had just been deposed, arrived in Portugal. Six years latter it was time for the Spanish Royal Family to settle in Estoril. After them, King Umberto and Queen Maria José of Italy, as well as the Franch Royal Family. Cascais, Estoril and Sintra, the so-called "Golden Triangle", are the destinations chosen by these royal visitors. The bar at the Hotel Palácio served the count of Barcelona and the count of Paris, the sea waters of Guincho welcomed the young Spanish and Italian Princes, the restaurant "O Pescador" was the countess of Barcelona's favorite and the "São Carlos" theater received King Umberto, who was eager for entertainment.
The author, Charles Phillipe d'Orleans, Duke of Anjou, didn't live through these years, but he knows them by heart thanks to his grandmother, the countess of Paris who told him about "Quinta do Anjinho", the house of happiness, refuge of the French Royal Family. It was there where the Spanish Infantas Pilar and Marguerita were married in a celebration never before seen. Princess Maria Pia of Italy chose Cascais, the town where she grew up, to celebrate her wedding which made news all throughout Europe and it was in Villa Giralda, Estoril, where King Juan Carlos of Spain's younger brother, Alfonsito, died in tragic circumstances.
