King Carl XVI Gustav and Queen Silvia
« on: June 19, 2005, 09:45:36 PM »
I thought it would be nice to start a thread about the current queen of Sweden, since she has really modernized the Swedish monarchy and brought so much color and grace to her position.

Carl Gustav promised his grandfather that he would not marry before the age of 30.  After he met and began to date Sylvia, the Swedish press put a lot of pressure on him to marry, but he refused to comment.  Sylvia was a beautiful woman but a foreigner and not royalty, so there were mixed feelings about her.  The fact that she did not speak to the press made her mysterious.

After the King died and Carl Gustav succeeded, he proposed to Sylvia and they were married.  He was madly in love with her, but there was some question as to whether she felt equally in love or simply thought this would be a good future for her.  After all, Carl Gustav is not the most interesting person on the planet nor the most handsome!

Within a very short period of time, Sylvia became the most beloved Swedish royal.  She dressed exquisitely, had a beautiful hairstyle, and always said the right thing.  People flocked to see the royal couple - quite a change in this socialist country where although the old king was much loved, the people weren't convinced that a monarchy was still the way to go.  Sylvia was on the cover of every magazine and there were articles about her every day.

As the children were born, Sylvia made sure that there were photo opportunities and that the children, while living a pretty simple life, were exposed to the people.  Every year, a book is published about the royal family and what they did and where they went.

As time has gone by, Sylvia has become slightly less popular.  She is perceived by some to be clinging to youth - plastic surgery rumors - and to be domineering of her husband.  Some have insinuated that her strong personality and fixation on appearance contributed to Crown Princess Victoria's anorexia.  However, she remains extremely popular and contributes her time and energy to a variety of causes all over Sweden and the world.

Yes, she is half Brazilian, half German.  Has many relatives in both countries and it's said she's gone to Brazil for facelifts.

I agree, Maddy is the most beautiful of the children.  A lot of people wish she and Prince William would hook up.

I was wondering why Carl Gustav chose this rather unusual regnal name - I mean why the renal number between his two Christian names. Does anybody know?

It's because he is the sixteenth king named Carl ruling in Sweden. Like him, his grandfather Gustav Adolf was the sixth king named Gustav in Sweden - thus his name: Gustav VI Adolf. His father was Gustav V. It's quite common to give two names to boys in Sweden like Carl-Gustav, Carl-Erik, Jan-Magnus, Sven-Olof, and they really use them both.

So is that why Prince Carl Philip has 2 first names, while his sisters only have 1 each?

For example:
Victoria Ingrid Alice Desirée
Carl Philip Edmund Bertil
Madeleine Thérèse Amélie Joséphine

Maybe! The present king, Carl XVI Gustaf, never kept it secret that he hoped his son would once be the ruler instead of his firstborn, crown princess Victoria. If Carl Philip would have kept his short-time position as a heir of the throne (he was indeed the heir as a baby for some months before the law change which decided that the firstborn will be the heir whatever his/her gender was!), he would have ruled as Carl XVII Philip...

It is not only common in Sweden to give boys(and girls) two names,it happens in many if not most countries.

Yes, I know, it's common even here in Finland. My meaning was just to point out that particular case with Carl-Gustaf's and Carl Philp's names.  :)

I am surprised to see that on the guest list there is no mention of a royal representative from Great Britain. This surprising in that the king is descended on his father's side through his grandmother--Princess Margaret, his great grandfather--Prince Arthur, to Queen Victoria.
Do any readers have any further information on why the British royal family is ignoring this event?

The only reason I can think of, is that a few years ago, Prince Charles gave an interview and he commented that the Swedish royal family, specially the pricesses "do not lead a royal life" meaning that they openely live with their boyfriends, etc.  Apparently this comment upset King Gustav and Queen Sylvia, and they did not even gave an excuse, officially, why they would not attend Prince Cahrles wedding.
