I remember seeing a picture of the girls with similar outfits while in Germany. Perhaps she was visiting Germany or taking a walk?

It was taken in Germany in 1910. She's just wearing a duster and a hat, it's normal; they probably went out for a drive as I think people wore stuff like that when they were in cars!

That costume is indeed what women and girls wore when driving in cars.  It is most likely from the Darmstadt visit of 1910. GD Ernst of Hesse was the first major investor in Mercedes (before it merged with Benz in the 20s) and loved to drive the cars all over the place, rather fast.  She was most likely going for a ride with Uncle Ernie.

Anastasia being Anastasia, I am sure she loved the rather exaggerated aspect of this photo, i.e., the angle and the way she looks like she's peering out from a cave, rather than simply wearing a hat. Also, check out the sleeves that seem a bit too long, although the length of the garment is perhaps in keeping with the style.

But I doubt she really needed a walking stick!  Which begs the question: Was it typical for the young and able-bodied to carry walking sticks, as they would carry reticules and wear gloves, hats, etc.? Or were they simply fashion accessories?

I think it was just considered ladylike to carry a walking stick when your out in the city or on a drive. Just like gloves and hats.

That picture is also in the book Nicholas & Alexandra: The Family Albums. The caption reads: "August-October 1910, Friedberg, Germany. Anastasia. The little girl is wearing a woman's clothes: long coat, cane, hat and veil, most probably for a trip in the car. This type of transport was hardly ever used in Russia, for they did not often travel far from the Imperial residences, but abroad, in Germany in particular, they were often out in one of these marvellous machines."

Good question about the walking sticks, Janet! I think it was just a fashion accessory as I have seen other pictures of the girls using one and of course they didn't really need one.

Granduchess,

We make the request in this forum that users do NOT use IM chat spellings.

As this forum is used by many schools and students, we ask that everyone type the most gramatically proper English to their ability.
So, please: Why. What. Cool, etc etc etc

Thank you.
