I think he was just posing like that, Nastya wouldn't do those kind of things anymore, remember she was 17 and probably depressed like her sisters!

Rather sad about his mates...the Marakov brothers being killed in the war....but sooo many were killed....rather like that sad/beautiful scene in "Dr. Zivago"... where the young chaps from the military school are marched out by the old officer to face the Reds...and are mowed down...lying romantically in death in golden wheat and red poppies...amazing cinematographie....
