Nicholas & Alexandra @ Home/Santa Fe
« on: May 20, 2004, 11:02:36 PM »
My family is making plans to visit Santa Fe from July 1 through 5 - that's 4th of July weekend - to see the Nicholas and Alexandra exhibition.

We're taking the train on the night of June 30th from LA's Union Station and will arrive around 2 PM on July 1st. Our return trip will find us leaving Lamy (close to Santa Fe) about 2 PM on Monday the 5th - and we'll be back in the City of Angels at 8 AM on the 6th.

My sister says hotels outside the downtown area are fairly reasonably priced and the city is easy to get around in.

So, I am offering to help make arrangements if anyone wants to join in any part of our journey.

That would be a real treat to see the exhibit with someone as knowledgeable as you.  I wonder what an airplane ticket from NH to NM would be.  Umm, I think I'll check that out.

Nice offer! ::)

I've heard from my sister that the Art Museum has a very limited budget for this exhibition - and so I believe no web site for it.

There is some infos ive just found about it at www.museumofnewmexico.org, and on www.russiansummer.com.

It sounds so fantastic!!! It says that toys of Alexei will be on display, even Tsarskoe Selo furniture! I wish there was an accompanying catalog!!

Have a great time and do post a report about it! :D

Elisa :)

Do you know how different  this exhibit  is from the Nicholas and Alexandra exhibit that was in Mobile, 5 years ago?  I went to that one and would hate to travel all the way to Santa Fe to see the same thing.

There is some more information about this exhibition in the "News Links" thread, under "At Home with the Last Czar" exhibition.

There does not appear to be a complete list of what's included in this exhibit and so therefore difficult to know if there is any duplication. However, the exhibit is also going to Newark, which may be more airport friendly for some.

Hi, I just discovered this - you folks may already have known it but in the following thread there is another discussion about this exhibition:

The Alexander Palace Discussion Board
 Imperial Russia and Romanov Links
   News Links
"At Home with the Last Czar" exhibition

It includes a couple of web links that talk about the exhibit.

Hi Dominic,

Try a search of "Russian Summer"  or "Museum of Fine Arts Santa Fe & Nicholas & Alexandra" and that should get you some info. Good Luck!

Hi everyone!!! I recently saw the Nicholas and Alexandra exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe, and some lingering questions remain! I know the basic history of the family, and how they lived and died...but there are some things I do not understand.  I stumbled onto this website, and I was hoping you all might be able to help me out:

1.  Alot of the exhibits / artifacts mentioned that they "remained in the house until 1941".  What is signifcant about 1941?  If the family was taken to Serbia and executed in 1917, what happened to the palace afterwards?

2.  Did the family know ahead of time that they were going to be overthrown and/or exectuted?  Do you think it's possible they knew it was coming, and as a precaution, sent away some of the most valuable items / belongings in the house for safe keeping, knowing it might all end up being destroyed?

3.  What is the state of the palace now?  I have read some posts here where people mention it is deteriorating and only a few rooms are open to the public.  How / why did the palace survive the revolutions? I would imagine the same people who overthrew / executed the family would have immediatly destroyed the palace.

Those are the only questions I can think of for now....I really enjoyed the exhibit.  Has anyone else seen it? What are your thoughts?

Thanks!

The Germans invaded Russia and occupied the palace and looted it when they retreated.  The family was sent to Siberia. Not Serbia.

They took what they could with them, as it turned out.  There was no way to "send things" once they were under arrest.

Actually, the Palace was kept intact as a museum from 1918 until the Germans came. Go to the "recent visits" page on the Alexander Palace mainpage to see the state of the palace today.  There are also other threads here that discuss how the AP survived.
