The Jewel Album of Tsar Nicholas II, by von Solodkoff
« on: July 09, 2005, 10:34:15 AM »
I have just bought at Moscow's Kremlin's Armoury a wonderful book by Alexandr von Solodkoff: " The Jewel Album of Tsar Nicholas II and A Collection of Private Photographs of the Russian Family " issued in 1997 at Hermitage London .
I enjoyed photo and memo book of Nicholas about which juwels he had got as the present.
I hope to read some your comments about this book, but did not find the topic with this title.
Do you know about this book?

Yes, this is a lovely book. It is a nice mix of rare photos that I had not seen elsewhere, as well as of course the catalog of Nicholas's jewels. These are all his hand-drawn colour sketches of the jewels he received from 1879 to 1913, plus there is an interesting article on the history of the pieces. It is especially touching to see the jewelry received from his wife and children. The photos, as I mentioned, are a real treat as well. I especially enjoyed a couple showing Alix with baby Tatiana.

This book is great! I got a used copy quite a few years ago and was very pleased. The pictures are beautiful and the jewels are wonderful.

I've been waiting almost six months to receive a copy from Amazon.   It sounds wonderful.

I got this book a few years ago and it is one of my favorites concerning the family. The sketches Nicholas made of the jewelry are impressive. His personality is really revealed here, too. Not too many people would have made the effort to catalogue these gifts, but he cared enough to do it because they were given to him by the people he cherished.
The photos are lovely as well - definitely a great find!

Marialana,

This book is one of my favorites, for all of the same reasons. :)

I bought a copy of this this week for $70 off ebay, so I was extremely pleased. It is usually much more expensive and even if it's not brand new, it's still worth it. There's another one for sale on ebay (not for the same price though), so anyone interested in buying it should check it out.

You did well Ortino!

I have seen this book on offer for $250!

This publication is really a treasure to behold. The book's central inclusions featuring Nikolai's personal illustrations in simple exercise books, adds silent appeal by their honest simplicity.

I havn't seen this book, but I can recommend another, completly amazing "coffe-table-book": The Regalia of the Russian Empire. 235 pages, 214 coloured illustrations. Clothes, icons, 14th century caps, crowns, church - and religious treasures... the list is endless. All the way up to the Grand Imperial Crown, N&A's coronation dresses and so on. In a way, a perfect panorama of how the Russian Empire went megalomaniac.   :P
An absolutely beautiful piece of work, according to me.

Let me see...
1994.

I have no idea whatsoever of how easy it is to obtain on the English-speaking market. I got it from a friend who by then bought it for me at a bookfair in Sweden.

On Amazon, that book is over $200. Perhaps it can be found cheaper on Ebay or another book site.

I just got a copy from the Netherlands for about $30. (Woo-hoo!  :D )

I agree, it's a lovely book -- beautifully made & arranged, and with a good number of photos new to me -- but I have to admit, I was expecting to be completely blown away by a book that's been known to fetch prices of $200+, and I wasn't. In my opinion, it's well worth double what I paid for it, but I wouldn't recommend devoting hundreds of dollars to it.
