Objects named after Alexei or dedicated to Alexei
« on: July 13, 2005, 07:16:37 AM »
I just saw a posting about 'Kolchak Island is back on the map.'  That must have been an island in the Arctic Ocean on the northern coast of Russia... where Malyy Taymrr is now.  Malyy Taymrr was officially dubbed Tsarevich Alexei Island when it was discovered by Russian explorers early in the 20th century.  Imagine having an island named after you when you are a child!

Were there other things -- buildings, schools, etc.  named after him?  I think the 'Alexei Military School' might have been, but I could be wrong.

Here are links to two of four churches I know of that are dedicated to St. Alexei.

And pictures of the first service ever held at St. Alexei's Church in Kashino, Russia -- where their church bell was first rung on the 100th birthday of St. Alexei.  The church was ready on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord:

The other two churches are in Yalta in the Crimea, and Odessa, Ukraine.  St. Alexei's Church in the Ukraine survived a 'takeover' attempt in the past few years....

I once heard that there is a modern group of monarchist Cossacks that call themselves the Brotherhood of the Martyred Tsarevich Alexei.

Lots of times flowers or other plants are named for people.  Does the Imperial Family have any?

How had I not seen this topic earlier? I have never heard for any plant named after IF. To topic - I have heard for one school named after Heir in Russia.

This is the closest I have heard of a plant named for the Russian Imperial Family.  http://gurneys.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_13735

"Russian Princess Lobelia."  If it is on the fall shipping schedule, I can order it to be shipped on September 14!  I am ordering four, of course!
