St Petersburg, recommended Imperial highlights
« on: May 08, 2004, 07:55:03 AM »
Hi to all, it really is encouraging to find so much interest and information. Having had the "bug" for what seems like many years I am now in a position to go and see for myself all the palaces and places that have captured my imagination for so long.
What I'd like to know is what other members would recommend as to the most pertinent places to see beyond the given tours, Alexander/Winter/Catherine Palaces. I do hope you can help

The Yussupov palace is very interesting, and I really love to visit the cemetary at the Alexander Nevsky monastery---lots of famous people and cool monuments there (Rimsky-Korsakov, Petipa, etc.)  One of the cooler "Soviet" sights is the WWII/seige memorial.  One of the best views of the city is the view from the top of the St. Issac Cathedral---you can climb to the base of the dome.

Hello Domovoii

Will you may be staying at the Astoria Hotel?  Along Bolshaya Morskaya ulitsa is the House of Faberge at no 24 and Vladimir Nabokov's house at no. 47. There are many hidden gems throughout the city! A beautiful guidebook is Eyewitness Guide for St. Petersburg. And when visiting the Alexander and Catherine Palaces in Tsarskoye Selo, there is also the Pushkin dacha, Znamenia Church, a local history museum and much more!

Have a beautiful trip !

Hi Domovoii
It would be interesting to know if you are with a tour or on an independent visit.  If on a tour you may be restricted by the tour itinerary but if you are able to pick your destinations I would highly recommend you walk along the streets of St. Petersburg - get maps etc. of course.  Oh, and take the subway - it is fascinating.  And check out the bookstore in the Singer building on the Nevsky Prospek.
I would love to be travelling there again.

To see the city from its earliest period may I recommend:

1. Peter & Paul Fortress - the oldest structure in SPb which contains a complex of buildings such as the Trubetskoi Bastion, Peter's boat (botik) and the Imperial Burial vaults.

2. Peter the Great's original Cabin (Domik) on Petrovskaya Nab. Nearby is Kshesinskaya's Mansion and further along are some fascinating Russian art deco buildings.

3. Peter's Summer Palace (Nab. Kutuzova) and his adjoining Summer Gardens (Letni Sad) which contains a magnificent promenade of sculptures + an intriguing statue of the fabilist Krylov which depict all his animal fables.

3. All the buildings along the University Nab. - are early examples of Russian architecture: the Naval museum is supurb, the Kunskammer (Peter's collection of oddities and curiosities), the attractive University building (12 Colleges) and Menshikov's Palace.

4. The Anichkov Dvoretz which was the second palace to be constructed in SPb.

If you are interested in Russian literature then I can recommend the following:

1. Dostoyevsky's Appartment

2. Pushkin Museum - his appartment.

Then of course there are the spectacular raising of all the bridges along the Neva, which occur after midnight. They permit the sea traffic to pass thru in the early night and effectively closing off the city center.

The spectacular Kazan Cathedral on Nevsky Prospect which contains Kutuzov's remains.

Spend a few hours walking the back streets and discover the fascinating bridges crossing the various canals, such as the Bankovsky Most with its gryphons, the Anichkov Most with its 4 horses all in different poses and the Lion bridge.

For Russian Art in addition to the Hermitage the Mikhailovsky Palace on Ploshad Iskusstv is excellent.

The Field of Mars with its Eternal Flame, The Admiralty building with its spire + park, the Smolny complex and Tauride Palace with its park.

The intriguing statue of Catherine the Great with all her lovers positioned at its base on Ploshad Ostrovskogo with its surrounding buildings - the Pushkin Library and the adjacent Alexandrinsky Theater are wonderful. If you venture behind the theater walk down the unique Ulitsa Zodchevo-Rossi is a fine mathematical achievment - its precise dimensions are best viewed from Lomonosov Pl.

In my opinion to complete your SPb experience a cruise on the canals by small boat is worth it!

If you can go during the White Nights in June, SPb is at its festive best.

My roots are here. I try and visit as often as I can. Its a beautiful city full of history and culture. I sincerely hope you enjoy your experience.

;D

Oh Belochka, to be visiting all these places with you would be wonderful - thanks from all of us for your list of interesting sites to visit.  I agree that St. Petersburg is a gorgeous city to visit, with so much history. Actually, it is an unforgetable experience, one that lasts a life time.
At the same time, it is a vibrant living city - the people are fascinating.
Domovoii, I would also suggest you take the bus or the train or taxis and talk to people about where you are from and what you are seeing.
When are you going?

Thanks for your kind words Cathy!

There are a number of cities in the world which I have been fortunate enough to visit, but there are very few which draw you to return.

IMHO SPb is one such magic place!

Wow!! Many many thanks, for all your information, I must say you've more than whetted my appetite.
I'm sure everyone finds their own angle, by which I mean connection with a place, after 15 years of reading whatever I can, which under the English Municipal Library Service is less than definitve, I'm sure I'll recognize immediately.

Thought you'd enjoy this website on the history and traditions of the Cathedral, including its floor plan and the members of the Imperial Family buried there.

An additional recommendation is the Cathederal on the Spilled Blood, a few minutes walk from the Nevsky Prospeckt and Kazan Cathederal. The outside as many will know is in the old Russian style very much like St Basils in Moscow.
The Interior had recently been restored, and is amazing.
All made out of mosaic, and now very vibrant in its colours of orthodox saints....definately worth a visit.

Its also nice to wander around the city center and see where your steps take you. I felt totally safe (well as safe as in any large western city), and the people are very friendly ... an amazing number speak English, though do try and learn at least several phrases in Russian, and the cyrillic alphabet !!
