« on: July 14, 2005, 01:52:57 AM »
I know that during a long period of time Alexei wore sailor suits and when the war started he wore soldier uniforms, but what I always wondered was, did Alexei wear anything els, I mean you can't just wear sailor suites and soldier uniforms all you life :-/

i'm shure he had some other things to wear. i mean that would get so boring not to have any other clothes.

Well, in the early 20th Century sailor suits were normal everyday clothes for kids - like to-day's T-shirt and jeans. Everyone wears them and it is as much a uniform as is lots of little early 1900s boys in their sailor suits.

I would imagine there were variations in cut and style. However jeans and T-shirts are much more a uniform than perhaps you think or realise! Also for those of us working in offices - we also have to wear our own 'corporate' uniform of collar and tie (which I very much dislike - not that I'd rather wear a sailor suit, mind!.)

I read on a website, that he had several different kinds of sailor suits (like a different color teeshirt) for an example, one might have white pants, and one might had blue, or one might have short sleeves and one might not.

All the photos posted so far show Alexis in various Navy regulation dress (winter, summer, service,. etc.) . Here are two more.

Here he wears a black pea-jacket over summer dress, which is unusual (must have been cold!). Photo taken on a balcony at Livadia.

Not clearly visible here, the long black winter coat. He is probably sitting down to conceal the fact he couldn’t walk at the time  :'(:

When he was younger, he wore a child version of a sailor uniform with short pants (even a skirt when a baby). Here is one for summer :

And one in summer "parade" dress:

Cute no?!

Later Alexis began to wear various regulation sailor suits in miniature (and sometimes Army uniforms, although, unitil War broke out, it seems to have been for photo sessions only). I have only seen him in « civilian » clothes on a very few photos where he’s in some kind of traditional Russian costumes. Grand-dukes were not seen as civilians really but as future officers, as they were all expected to enter military service either in the Army or Navy. They were enrolled at a very young age – sometimes at birth – in various regiments and were named colonel-in-chief of a regiment. They usually received its miniature uniform at a very young age with the rank insignia of junior lieutenant. So technically, they were already on duty!

Of course, as Georgiy wrote, it wasn’t unusual for boys at that time to wear some kind of fancy sailor suits. But as soon as they were old enough to wear long pants, the young grand-dukes wore a smaller version of the real thing. As the Tsarevich was the future commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, I guess he had to be seen as already being in training for the job.

I might add that it wasn’t unusual for boys to wear a uniform then, as schoolboys and cadets at military schools did, as well as a lot of male adults (civil servants, soldiers and officers, etc.) and that, according to regulations, military personnel were usually not allowed to wear civilian clothes at all. So I guess one could say that Alexis wore a uniform because he had to!

Yeah they are cute though! When I was in high school I wore one of my Dad's old sailor jackets from when he was in the Navy. He was really skinny back then so it fit me perfectly! I got a lot of compliments on it. I like sailor uniforms, they're so cute! I also like those striped shirts that they wore underneath them.!
