I have no idea. Â Where did the picture come from? Â
There are so many things that makes this (the colored picture, not the black and white) seem like Katharine of Aragon: the eyes, the thrust out chin, the headdress, the general fashion (especially the jewels). Â
Anyways, I googled Katherine Parr and found the image in question on the site:
http://tudorhistory.org/parr/gallery.htmlThe picture is listed as Katherine Parr, currently located at Lambeth palace, and that it was painted by an unknown artist. Â Also, compare it to the painting of Katharine of Aragon done in the 1530s and it seems almost identical.
My theories: mistaken identity, Parr's painter copying the style of Aragon's painter, or a deliberate attempt to compare/contrast the two wives (first wife and last wife, Catholic and Protestant, both virtuous, both educated, both older, etc.) I also remember reading some where, probably in one of Wier's books, that Katharine was named for Katharine the First like many girls so maybe she (Katherine II) in some way was paying tribute to her (Katharine I).
This is starting to confuse me! Â
