Hi,

There is another thread on this film somewhere on this message board.  You may want to search for it, as it is very informative...

The ballroom scene was filmed in 'The Nicholas Hall', the largest room in the Winter Palace.  Everyone is then shot leaving down 'The Jordan Staircase' and out onto Palace Embankment & the Neva River.

It is an amazing film. I had no idea thay shot it all in one take. Astonishing.

The Winter Palace seems even more lavish and grandiose to me now.

Definitely a film to be watched more than once.

I just got the film and haven't watched anything but the special features (it's the collector's edition) and it looks great!  I'll have a better response once I've actually watched the film, though.

Recently I purchased my own copy of Russian Ark; I'd seen it just once and not absorbed it very well.

Now that I can watch it at my leisure I can appreciate it much more than before. As many already have indicated, the film has a dreamlike tone and is meant to show you the treasures of the Hermitage and the Hermitage itself, while at the same time reminding you of the Hermitage's place in Russian history. If you accept this approach, then you will not be disappointed in the very brief depictions of Alexandra, her sister Elizabeth, Nicholas, and the children. As many of you have noted, they are taking tea in the room at the end of a long hallway where the Provisional Government made its last stand; the filmmakers are going for symbolism rather than reality. As for the four young girls who run down the hallway with Anastasia, I believe the filmmakers intended that brief scene to foreshadow the Anastasia mythology of her supposed separation from her family.

This is absolutely one of my favorites, perfect if you just curl up with a pot of tea and let the film wash over you. The imagery is stunning.

Every time I watch the film I am awe struck by the sheer beauty of the film and astonished at the technical side that must have been a nightmare!
