"Romanovy:Ventsenosnaya semya"
« on: May 31, 2004, 11:53:43 AM »
Does anybody have seen this film? What do you think about it?
I was dazzled by the settings but I was intrigued by the scene of the blood transfusion between a daughter of Nicholas and a guard, after their arrest.  This scene actually existed?   ???

Yes I have a copy of the film but only with russian soundtrack, its a dvd so I was a bit dissapointed that it did not have an english soundtrack or subtitles. Lynda Bellingham is an english actress who used to advertise Oxo cubes beef stcok cubes. But she was also in All Creatures great and small. She gave a convincing portrayal of AF. The scene of the blood transfusion awakens a something I have read about but I am not sure what. The film is abit florid, but my only concern is the fact that AF in the film is far too healthy. But a good film. The Emperors new study was decorated at the AP for this film. The Imperial Train was recreated too, very well done for a film set.

I have located the dvd in a couple of thre Russian bookstores here.  But I would rather have it subtitled,  if there is ever a  chance of that happeneing.

I also only have a Russian copy without subtitles.

I also wondered about the blood transfusion. I cannot imagine it ever happened. Can't remember having read about this anywhere.

You're right, David. AF really appears much too healthy throughout the film.

Lisa, thanks for providing the links. As an "All Creatures Great and Small" fan, it is hard to imagine L. Bellingham portraying AF...but I understand that she is quite good.

Lanie,

Thanks for this really wonderful website. Beautiful scenes, I think this film is much more authentic then the N&A film from 1971. Although the Russian actor who's playing Nicholas looks a bit skinny to me ( mine opinion).

I must see this film, but where to find a copy?

I too love this film. I would like to get one with subtitles since it looks like it will not be translated. I am looking for a poster from the film and if there was a sound trak.
Does anyone know what the song was the Olga and her Father were singing?

This is the first film I have ever seen that made me cry. It is quite long, but very absorbing. The martyrdom of the family was quite stark and brutal, and while those images are reeling through your head you suddenly see the icon of all the new Russian martyrs incl. the IF, and Patriarch Alexei blessing the crowds during the Glorification.
A wonderful film.
One thing I thought strange though was that the Grand Duchess' hair remained shorn (in the film) a year after they cut it - you'd think after a year it would have grown a bit...in some ways it added to the mood of the film though.
