Dear SarahElizabethII

I would love to have that movie too.  Can you play in USA in a normal DVD player?.  Do you trust the website enought to give your credit card number?  I tried it but unfortunately, I do not speak a word of russian, so I would like to know if you were successful.

Hi guys,

I just checked it out and it looks like you can only order it if you live somewhere in Russia...  :(

Amelia: no, you wouldn't be able to play it on a regular DVD player in the US, since it is Region 5, you would need a region free player (which you can get in the US).

I read only the exterior shots were made at the Alexander Palace, but that all the interior filming was done in a studio in Prague.

The curator at the Alexander Palace was the one who told me that both the exterior and interior scenes were doneat the AP (at least in some of the rooms) and that the furniture they used for the film is now exhibited at the AP... Perhaps they did some additional fill in scenes later in Prague... ?

www.books.ru has the video (PAL) in stock

http://www.books.ru/shop/books/13553

They ship abroad and accept all major credit cards, AFAIK.

Their system is very similar to amazon - register, add to cart, pay. Shipping from Russia can take time but I have found them to be very reliable.

Thanks for the link, Narechka!

I've just spent 20 minutes in front of the computer with my Russian dictionary, but I'm pretty darn sure I've placed a successful order!  I've got a confirmation email, but I can't read it because the cyrillic characters don't come through...  ::) It's just a smidge under $17 for the DVD & airmail shipping to the US (regular post is $3 less). We'll just have to wait and see!

Now, I hope somebody I know has a region-free DVD player!  :-/

SE, you can buy one these days for around $50, well worth the investment!

I finally got to see the film, courtesy of Robert H, who generously loaned it to me (Robert, you're the best!). I think that it is by far the best Romanov film I have seen so far. I highly recommend it if you can get it! It keeps close to the events and does not go over the top, as these historical films often tend to do. The acting is superb, I thought, and so is the script. And the AP shots are so much fun to see, especially since I just came back from there only a month ago!  :D

Hope it works out for you. I'm glad I was able to help you  :)

Just wanted to add that I have watched the film a few times and really enjoyed it.

That's good to know. Now, I just have to wait for my Visa card to recover from the Romanov spree I've been subjecting it to since Easter...  ;)

I can sell an Ntsc VHS original video. I got it on DVD now.
Its the best movie about the Romanovs I´ve got. ts in Russian not subtittles, but as we all know the story you can follow it. But I´d love to find a subtittled version.

If you are interested let me know please.

Frankie.

Oh phooey!

My order from books.ru came today, and I've made a silly mistake -- I ordered a PAL format VHS instead of a DVD!  ::) :(

I know I can get it converted, but that will run me another $15. However, if anyone here is willing to buy the VHS from me at cost, I'd rather just re-order myself a new DVD instead and save a little money.

So, if you're interested in a brand new VHS (European format!!) of Romanovy:Ventsenosnaya semya, please PM me.

Sarushka,

You didn't make a mistake, because it seems the same thing happened to me with them. They don't even specify whether it is a DVD or VHS when they confirm the order, this is why the confusion. I know I checked off DVD when I was ordering, but it still came out as VHS (or so they claim) but I have not received my order yet, I only inquired about it and this is what they told me... So supposedly they are sending me a VHS too! Which means I may be putting mine up for sale when I get it too.... At this point, I am not even sure if they have it in a DVD format...

Helen --

As far as I can tell, "video" in Russian (at least on that website) refers only to VHS. I don't have a clear memory of specifying DVD, so I think I just made the assumption that's what I was ordering.

I placed an order today for what I hope is the DVD version. I'd apprecite it if you've got a moment to double-check me, though:

If it's not, I still have time to cancel!

A little update: I just got an automated confirmation email from books.ru, and it clearly states that my new order is for a DVD. (The previous order's confirmations didn't specify one way or the other).
*whew*

So, if anybody else wants to order it, Norechka's link is for the VHS; the one I just posted is for DVD.
