Grimaldi... an unfortunate name in English parlance
wonder if it has a meaning in its original language ?
Grimaldi is a patronym from the Germanic name Grimoald or Grimwald. The first part,
grim can mean either terrible, horrible or mask. (Compare Wilhelm (William): Will + helmet and Grimbert: Mask + bright). The second part,
wald, means rule or dominion, the same as in
Vladimir and common
wealth. The Grimaldis derive their patronym from 12-century Grimaldo Canella, Consul of Genoa.
