What time are you all arriving so I can dust out the spare bedroom?  :D

We hardly get any royal docos here, especially on free-to-air T.V. so don't be too envious!  I find it hard to believe this programme on Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna is having its world premiere here though as it would not be a local production.  ???

I'll try to record it as 9.30 p.m. is usually the time I fall asleep on the couch... :-[ ::)

Did Olga paint portraits?

I thought she mostly did water colors of nature and that she really began to come into her own after she moved to Canada.

Grace - I missed the connecting flight from LA  ::)  ::)  ::) (I wish).  Perhaps next time.   ;D

Yes she did.  While in Denmark she painted her Goddaughter.  Who was the daughter of a farmer.  While Her and Her husband lived in  a little farm.

However, we cannot order the dvd - due to the great restrictions on who can purchase it ... solely for educational purposes.

To be honest the doco did remind me of a highschool doco.   Although found it strange they used Olga N's 16 birthday portrait were they are having that ball.   Although I found it interesting seen new footage of Nicky and Olga A.  She also died quick paintings of nurses and those that were injured.

Hi rosieposie

The documentary series A Royal Family a 6 part series on Denmark's Royal Family- the last episode was on SBS TV last night is available through the SBS section of Dymocks book store, George Street, Sydney
I missed some of the early episodes, what I have seen is interesting, especially on the Romanov connection to the Danish monarchy, one episode is about Empress Marie Feodorovna.
The Alexander Palace was included in the credits of last nights episode.

This documentary would appeal more to those who have very little knowledge about Grand Duchess Olga.

Very little new visual material was presented. The program started with her funeral sevice inside the church and concluded with her coffin been taken down the stairs of the church.

We saw the small room where she died alone with its single family photograph and scant furnishings.

A number of persons who knew her were interviewed, such as her Danish god-daughter and one of her ex daughter-in-laws and finally her closest Canadian friend from the Russian community. Just over half the documentary covered with her Russian and Danish residency periods, highlighting that she became a refugee twice in her life.

What was new to me was seeing the small Danish museum that was devoted to her life in Denmark.

Much was placed on the fact that she prefered less pomp and ceremony of the Imperial Court (starting with N II's coronation ceremony) and that she was more comfortable tending to her vegetables and enjoying the simplicity of what rural life had offered her, with her loving husband. Her passion was her painting, and the program showed quite a few that she completed over the years.

On two occassions it was emphasized that she categorically declared that AA was not Grand Duchess Anastasia. Towards the conclusion of the documentary this point was strongly brought out, with a few images relating to the German court case and her her testimony (in part).

My biggest regret in watching this presentation was that we never hear the Grand Duchess speak. It would have been wonderful to hear her voice!

The documentary is nicely done and is well worth seeing if the opportunity presents.

I just visited the Australian ABC site again  :(  and it appears that unless we live in Australia and are an "Australian Premium Member" with certain rights, we can not get a copy of this program.   :(
