Yes, thanks indeed for the 2 part posting!   The Grand Duchess  (as Vorres points out in quoting GD Olga A., she alone of her siblings) was "born to the Purple,"  that is to say, she was born to an enthroned Emperor and Empress.  Her older siblings were born during the time their father was the Heir.  While the Grand Duchess did manage to retain some items of her regal past/family, some were quite simple.  My sister owns (from a very reputable antiques dealer often mentioned here, coming from the Grand Duchess's estate) several monogrammed/numbered traveling linens of her mother, the Empress Maria F., and a simple handkerchief of the GD herself, monogrammed.....and with a darned/repaired worn hole.  Poignant memories of  "the times that were."

I was struck in this film by Olga's air of contentedness in the pictures of her later Canadian life.  Olga's life from her first marriage til her mother's death was indeed sad, but on her farm in Denmark and later in Canada she seemed happy and content especially with her family life. Her second marriage was a great success and she seems to have almost thrived in her lowkey environment. Although no great beauty, she comes across in her later photos as warm and attractive and fully at ease.

For those who may not be aware of the documentary film "Olga, The Last Grand Duchess" about Olga Alexandrovna, it's really quite good, with lots of nice film footage. I've just watched it after all these years, and was entranced. Of course, more could have been included & some could have been handled differently, but overall, it's very definitely worth watching!
Links are available earlier in this thread.

The painting is titled "Christian IX and his family" by Laurits Tuxen. I believe it hangs in the Amalienborg Palace in Denmark.

I wish there was more info on Nicholas Kulikovsky, in any source.  I'd like to know more about him.
