Video of Coronation 1896
« on: June 09, 2004, 12:24:25 PM »
Here is a link to a short clip of the Coronation of 1896. A small part of which I had never seen before is of the Cathedral doors!

Save it to your disc rather than open directly. Then open off-line from within a viewer (e.g. MS Media Player as I did).

Fantastic. It worked. Thank you, Mike.

In the first procession after the coronation, there is a scene with the IF. Directly behind Alix there is a man and a woman. Is the man GD Sergei?

There are actually three processions on that clip:
1st, at the coronation, where faces are indistinguishable - to me at least.
2nd and 3rd, at the Romanovs tercentenary celebration in 1913. They're not the same procession because military uniforms are of two different types. I guess you mean the second procession, where Alexandra holds a little princess' hand?
Obviously a man directly behind the imperial couple cannot be GD Sergei - he was murdered long before 1913. It seems like it's one of the younger (beardless) GDs, probably George - but I'm not sure.

Hi Mike !

I also believe that there are three separate processions in this clip. The first is the Coronation and the third is the tercentary of 1913. But I feel that the second procession is prior to the assassination of GD Serge and that is him with GD Elizabeth. Both Nicholas and Alexandra look very much younger that the 1913 procession.

You can't imagine my delight to see GD Sergei with Ella. Thank you so much Joanna.

Hey what time is the documentary on GD Olga on in your neck of the woods?

Wow that video clip was amazing! :o
It really brings the IF to life showing them as real people instead of beautiful photographs.A little blurry in some spots but wonderful to look at nonetheless. :D
Don't knock on Death's door....ring the doorbell and run. He hates that.:D

Hi Joanna,
You are at least partly right. I've found a picture of the same procession on the cover of General Mosolov's book. It is dated 1903. Whether the persons in question are really Sergei and Ella... I've scanned the picture, enlarged it (with a loss of quality, alas) and put aside a sure Sergei's portrait - here. Compare and decide for yourself. We can also call on the forum folks to vote! ;)

Hi Mike !

You are right it must be 1903 as you can see GD Olga very young walking next to Alexandra. I did it frame by frame also and allowing for movement I still feel it is GD Serge especially as he was Governer of Moscow at that time and would have been part of any ceremony with the Tsar in Moscow. I am curious what the occasion was in 1903. Was it Easter celebrations?

Just jumping in here uninvited (and will probably answer incorrectly!...:-) )
I suspect it is the Easter procession, though perhaps Mike will know for sure, but I'd also add that since Olga took her first communion in Moscow at Easter 1903, it seems to me that this is the day we are looking at, and that is why she is the one child who appears on the clip...

...also, if it were 1913, GD Ella would be wearing a habit, wouldn't she?
So long and thanks for all the fish
