Tatiana and Boris of Bulgaria
« on: August 06, 2005, 09:15:38 AM »
Stolypin's daughter - Alexandra wrote in the memoirs that one time there were a rumours about possible marriage of Tatiana and Boris of Bulgaria. The rumours were at the same time with the rumours of Olyga and Prince of Romania.
It seems to me, that we did not discuss it yet.

Dimitroff mentions them meeting in St. Petersburg in 1898 [and possibly 1909 but that I am not sure about that].  They just toddlers then. I have found no other mention so far.

Rumours were  during the season of 1913 - when 2 daughters debyuted.
But Olyga and Tatiana was with Boris in Kiev of 1911, when he came as the head of the delelgation for opening ceremony of Monument Alexandr II.
They were together in the theater when Stolypin was killed.

Hikaru--I once read in Anna Vyrubova's memoirs (the ones that aren't on this site--I read them on some Russian site I translated!) that Olga Nikolaevna often talked of marrying Boris of Bulgaria since he sent her nice presents.  I'm sure it was just silly talk from Olga, but it's still rather interesting.

Rumours of the season 1913 were as follows:
possible marriage of Olyga and Carol of Romania
Polssible marriage of Tatiana and Boris of Bulgaria

(Maybe, Carol proposed faster ?)

Tatiana was not a real romantic type, and probably would have been happy enough to have married someone she was supposed to marry, doing her duty. It is not thought that there was anyone she ever truly entertained the idea of marriage with, or had a crush on. I am sure she would have liked love in a marriage, but it is hard to know how soon she would have found someone to marry. If she had, I am sure he would have been entirely suitable, her mind and heart thinking. I don't know anything about Boris of Bulgaria, but if anyone knows more about him by all means post it !

Yes. I agree. Tatiana was the kind of person who seems to doesn't care about truly, romantic love in life. In this, I see her being very different than Maria. I suppose that, if heir parents would have said to her, that she must marry some prince , "X" or "Y" she would have married him without a question. For Tatiana (perhaps I'm wrong, but I see it that way) duty was always more important than feelings.

Tatiana's emphasis seems to have been on duty, and feelings romantic or otherwise were just not the big thing for her. So she would have done her duty and married as she was supposed to, but she could have brought some Romance into it too, of course.

Dear girls, you are not exactly right! Just read something about Tatiana in 1915, 1916. She fall in love all the time, a wounded, an other, a third. It was never very seriously, she did not suffered as Olga could, but she had a lot of crushes, she touhgt about young mens and so on! She was not romantic the way Olga was, it is a fact, but she also not this cold girl thinking only about duty you are drawing here!

Boris would have been a good match for Olga, in personal terms. They might have hit it off - they had much in common. They were both highly intelligent and sensitive people. Boris is still remembered fondly in Bulgaria to this day because of his wily, cunning dealings with Hitler and Stalin. He was a politically shrewd man in an unusually cruel and unforgiving age - oh, and as a side line, a good husband as well. All in all, a much better match for Olga than Carol of Romania (who as everybody knows ended up hated and despised by his own people)!

Thank you for your findings Matushka. Yes, I can see that Tatiana was duty bound, but she also was very human, and I think had her feelings much of the time under wraps. Outwardly she seemed cool and distant, but inside, she was very warm, sincere, and could be counted on! Now that's an atribute that any one who might be seeking a wife would love to have as a life-long partner. Duty for the empire first, and her beloved Russia, but as far as her heart was concerned, she held on to it to give it to the one, and only who could, and would cherish her first and always ! Remember, she had a mother who was married to the man she loved, their father.I believe for Tatiana's future, she as well as all her siblings would have followed as their parent's had in their marrying someone they loved and respected. Nothing less.

Tatiana

Yes, I put too much emphasis on duty, I think she did have her human side thanks for everyone for pointing this out. We see her one way, the most obvious way to see her, but there were depths below that, and we can see that. I think she was not someone who let emotions get in the way of things but had emotions just like everybody else.
