In royal and imperial families it would have been considered unproper and unlady like to wear jeans especialy if you were Victorian English. Queen Victoria would disapprove of her daughters, grandchilden and other female family members wearing jeans even for the men it would be inappropiate and untraditional in their gerneral opinions.
But why would they allow somking cigarettes and cigars in their families.Thats a unladylike and improper habit they should have never allowed. Nicholas allows Olga,Tatiana, Maria, and Anastasia to smoke even at 14 even though he was a heavy- chain smoker for more than 30 years. They should have known it was bad for them by the terrible awful smell it carried. Maybe they were coughing, and had a sore throat. They seem not to be concerned about their health. Thats stupid and crazy. Holly? what do you mean by "Cher".

I agree with you guys, it was sort of a..stupid question. But this isn't a really nice welcome for her. She probably doesn't know as much about this time as we do, and she really wanted to know if there were any pictures of Olga in jeans.
Well, there aren't.
Like they said already, jeans were only used for work, mostly in the mines. During the 1950's jeans teenagers wore them more often. During the 1960's the wearing of jeans became more acceptable and in the 1970's they became a fashion. Most of our parents didn't even wear jeans when they were young. So, the grand duchesses? No. ;)
Here's a photoshopped picture of Olga in jeans, but I don't think that was what you wanted.
And please Olishka~princess, first get some information before you start a whole thread about something. :)

Well, they DID wear pants, if only to act out parts of plays. There's a picture of Anastasia in Tobolsk wearing pants for a play. Then Anastasia's letter saying, "Olga is adjusting her trousers." Anyway, in those days, wouldn't "pants" mean underwear?

I read somewhere that in Britain they consider "pants" underthings and "trousers" what us in America call pants!

Again, this was probably what was popular at the time.

Yeah, people didn't know all the risks of smoking at the time, right?

I know we debated that photo a while back, but I still don't belive for an instant that's Anastasia. Even if you think the person in the photo resembles Anastasia, there's no way around the fact that the railing he/she is posing next to doesn't match any of the photos of the governor's mansion.

Women and girls didn't wear pants (trousers) anyway until at least the 1920s or 30s, so none of OTMA would have ever worn trousers except for in a play as a costume.

This is true. In the UK we call men's underwear 'pants' and we call what you think of as pants, 'trousers'.

Also, in colloquial terms, if we say something is 'pants', we mean it's rubbish or crap.

On the smoking question, the harmful effects of smoking were not known until the mid 20th century. Smoking was considered elegant and glamorous before then; everybody did it.  How they can NOT have realised that breathing smoke into their lungs was dangerous, I don't know, but there you have it.

I'm a little surprised Alexandra allowed OTMA to act out plays, even if it was in private and for the family's entertainment only. Actresses didn't have perfect reputations back then.

as long as they didn't get on stage in front of hundreds of people, then they would be allowed to act i would have thought. plays for the family hardly counts as grounds for the harlot label like women on stage got
