I would invite Alexandra and Nicholas and talk with them about their lives and their dreams.  I would include Dimitry, just to lighten things up a bit and maybe Ella, to make Alexandra more comfortable.  I would ask Nicholas why he could not ask his cousin George about being a constitutional monarch and opening up Russia to the twentieth century, so that he would be remembered as the Enlightened Tsar of the New Century, rather than the last tsar whose incompetence led the world down the path of communism.

These questions would be asked in a friendly, non-confrontational style.  As a lifelong Lutheran myself, I would ask Alexandra how much of Orthodoxy really came to make sense to her and how difficult really was her conversion.  I would ask her why she didn't learn from her older sister Victoria about the British democratic system and how it would have benefited Russia.

It would be worth being a footman or servant waiting at table to listen in to those conversations!

And they'd have to have a sneaky tape recorder stashed somewhere!  ;)

I'd have liked to get GV and NII around a table.... see if GV had much remorse. I think he might but then in that ubiquitous gruff fashion I don't think he'd make much mention of it, at least not first.

For a dinner strictly a deu, Miechen would be top of my list. I'd ask who she thought was a shyster, which characterswere involved in scandals or in intrigues, or who she felt was was truly brilliant. I'd love to hear how she felt about her nephew and his wife and what she felt about their mistrust, if she cared at all. Ask her what her dreams for her children were and see whether see was as driven as she is made out to be. Perhaps over dessert she could tell me about her dealings with Cartier and Faberge, who she preferred and why....Pick over her story, which I believe is yet to be told fully.

MF would be my second choice; I'd ask about her first engagement, which occasions featured her favourite Balls...her thoughts on her daughter in law, her hopes for her daughters, and then the rest of the tribe... Jewels, gowns, Palaces, and then about her life in exile. A fascinating woman who had so much and yet remained undiminished when it was all taken away.

I would love to dine with NAOTMAA.  I think that would be a fascinating experience.

But, I would truly cherish an evening with Sandro and KR.  I find both of these Romanovs to be intriguing.

So what kind of dinner are we talking?  What would be served?  And don't forget the wine or champagne.

Dessert anyone?

Olga Rodionovna, it is a very sordid tale!  ;)

This one will throw everyone, I'm sure: Sergei Alexandrovich. His grim & complicated personality tended to put everyone off. Nobody liked "Uncle Sergei".

If one takes the time to find the crack in such a subject's personal armour, the rewards can be fascinating. I'd enjoying finding out just how Sergei really "ticked".
