Does anyone have information on the six daughters of Grand Duke Wilhelm IV?
(Marie Adelheid, Charlotte, Hilda, Antonia, Elisabeth, Sophie)

well, what kind of information.  Numerous genealogies provide genealogical detail.  There are several German language books published in Luxembourg that include photos and information about the family.

what kind of information.

Books on them, photos, any internet sites you recommend, etc...

I have tried to find stuff on them for months and come up almost empty handed.  I know Marie Adelheid was forced to abdicate and I want to know more about that situation.  Charlotte abdicated I think just because she wanted to retire, but I'm not sure.  On the other four, I only know Antonia married Crown Prince Rupprect of Bavaria.

Really, any information would be nice, I'm not picky.

Thanks :)

Grand Duke William IV of Luxembourg, Guillaume Alexandre (April 22, 1852 - February 25, 1912) was the eldest child of Grand Duke Adolf of Luxembourg. He became Grand Duke when his father died on November 17, 1905.

On June 21, 1893, he married Maria Ana of Portugal. The couple had six daughters, the eldest of which, Marie-Adélaïde (1894-1924), was declared Heir Apparent on July 10, 1907, and eventually became the first reigning Grand Duchess of Luxembourg. The second daughter Charlotte (1896-1985), then succeeded her on the throne in 1919.

Their other daughters were:

   * Princess Hilda (1897 - 1979), who married HSH Adolf, Fürst zu Schwarzenberg.
   * Princess Antoinette (1899 - 1954), who married Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria.
   * Princess Elizabeth (1901 - 1950), who married HSH Ludwig Philipp, Prince von Thurn und Taxis.
   * Princess Sophia (1902 - 1941), who married HRH Ernst of Saxony, son of Frederick Augustus III of Saxony.

The family of William IV of Luxemburg wasn't a happy one. His first daughter Adelaide succeeded him on his death on February 25th 1912. Her reign wasn't at all popular and was forced to relinquish her position in favour of her more peaceful sister Charlotte, who the same year married the Parma Prince Felix. They had several children, and she died of cancer. He died in 1970.
William IV's next daughter was Hilda, who married a minor German Prince but failed to give him any children.
Antonia, the next one, married Rupert of Bavaria, the Crown Prince and son of Louis III. They had 6 children, of which the first and the fourth aren't alive any more. In fact, the first one, Heinrich, was killed in a car accident in Argentina in 1958. His widow, Anne de Lustrac, died in the same circumstances in 1999 at the age of 71. They ahd no children.
The next daughter, Élisabeth, married Ludwig Philipp von Thurn und Taxis and had two children. The eldest, Anselm, was killed in 1944 when he was just 19.
The youngest daughter, Sophie, died married and after having mothered three children, at the age of 31 in Munich during WW2 though I still don't know of what(air raid, natural causes, childbirth, illness?)...
Well, I did my best :) If you can see Maria Anna's pic above ask me to post more, I have one of Adelaide and one of Charlotte.-

Thank you so much for all the info, guys . . . Interesting to note that Queen Elisabeth of Romania was related to the Grand Ducal family . . .

Hilda of Luxemburg was originally engaged to Duke Philip of Wurttemberg in 1920. The engagement had to be broken because until GDss Charlotte's first child was born, Hilda was heiress. Public opinion wouldn't have supported her marrying a German prince. Later on her 3 younger sisters (Elisabeth, Sophie & Antonia) were all allowed to marry German princess but by then Charlotte had a child. Even still, the marriages didn't take place in Luxemburg and Charlotte wasn't allowed to attend. She eventually married Prince Adolf of Schwarzenberg (an Austrian princely house). He was an staunch (and vocal) anti-Nazi (as was his BIL CP Rupprecht of Bavaria) and he and Hilda spent most of the WW2 years in the US. They stayed there and he died in 1950 whereupon Hilda returned to Luxemburg until her own death in 1979.

Sophie's husband Ernst was the youngest son of the infamous Louise of Tuscany, CPss of Saxony. After having several children and tired of the hidebound Saxony court she fled with her children's tutor. Her last child was born after that but was accepted as her husband's. She was divorced from her husband and he retained custody of all the children, including the youngest. His elder brother, CP George, renounced his rights to the throne and became a priest. It's believed that due to his anti-Nazi activities he was murdered by the Nazis. Two of Ernst's sisters, Margarete and Alix, married twins Friedrich & Franz Josef Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (whose sister Augusta Victoria married their kinsman King Manuel of Portugal). Since Ferdinand I of Romania was their cousin that, along with Queen Elisabeth, was another link with the Romania throne though by marriage and not blood.

I have a photograph of the engaged couple - Hilda and Philipp that was given to me by Charlotte's ADC.  They actually spent a lot of time in Africa, and Adolf wrote a book about farming in Africa.  He wrote it in English.

I thought a picture of the map of Luxemburg may be interesting... Well, to be honest, I just found it by pure chance and thought "well why not"
