The Alexander Palace Roof

I was told today by a Pushkin official that money to restore the remainder sections of the roof on the Alexander Palace has been raised. Apparently, the World Bank gave the City of St. Petersburg money and some money have been designated to restore the roof and some things connected to the Catehrine Palace. When this will happen I don't know.  8)

That is wonderful news!! I was very recently at the Alexander Palace and was saddened that it had received so little maintenance.  Tucked away in the shadow of the Katherine, it seems that the gilt and glam continues to be favored by Russians, and the beautiful family story that still lingers on the grounds of the AP just isn't as important.

However, the staff clearly believes (as do I) that the Alexander Palace is the most precious gem of the neighborhood.

I was very touched to finally be there.  I plucked two blooming dandelions as a momento, and bought icons in the cathedral.  I was able to attend a service there. The cathedral is still being restored, but it was most evident that parishoners and the local priests are fiercely protective of the church and the grounds around it, so this too is a good sign.

Dear Cathy

Thank you for this wonderful news.   I know the roofs (excepting the Imperial Wing) are in a dangerous condition.   The late Alexander Kedrinsky was very worried about the future of the building.

With this sort of massive financial commitment, it is to be hoped interior restoration work will follow in the not too distant future.
