Marie-Adelheid with short hair, around the time of her abdication.  The photo is signed "Maus," which was her family nickname, given to her by her grandfather, Grand Duke Adolph.

That's weird; I can see them!  I just checked my settings on Flickr, and everything seems fine.  Let me know if the problem continues, okay?

Its a lovely picture of Marie-Adelaide Dru! She certainly was very pretty.

Perhaps its the short hair that makes it look that way but you can see the sadness in her face and she looks pretty worn out and tired.

The last 5 years of her life seem terrible. Forced to abdicate her throne, forced to leave the convent due to illness and then an early death. She fell from grace so fast, its really sad.

I feel so badly for this poor girl.  Edith O'Shaughnessy writes that Marie-Adelheid begged her mother to let her die--"Nothing I have undertaken on earth has succeeded.  Let me go."  She was only twenty-nine years old...

How depressing. Is there any opinion of Marie-Adelaide in Luxembourg today? Her sister Charlotte appeared to be very popular so I'm guessing there is very little remorse or sad feelings for ousting her.

I think people see her as a "tragic" grand duchess--she may have been misguided, but there is no doubt about her good intentions.  She was after all very young and inexperienced when she came to the throne.

At her funeral, the Bishop of Luxembourg referred to her as "the whitest of his flock," and Pope Benedict XV said "Your Grand Duchess Marie Adelaide... who by her prayers and her sacrifice seems to have been as if it were a lightning rod which turned from the House of Luxembourg the great storm that menaced it, allowing it to remain firmly on its own foundations..." her sister Charlotte "...was left to enjoy the secure and tranquil place made ready for her by that child of tragedy whose kingdom was not of this world."  (Pollock 61).
