A question about the Luxembourg succession.

Luxembourg, of course, was part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands until the death of Willem III. Willem's daughter, Wilhelmina, succeeded in the Netherlands.

Luxembourg passed to the House of Nassau due to the Salic Law. Given that Luxembourg was supposed to have barred women from the crown, how did they justify the succession of Marie Adelaide?

How was this finessed legally- especially with their Dutch relatives?

When it became apparent that Marie Anne was not going to have another child, the succession law was amended to Semi-Salic, meaning a woman could inherit after the men .. and as there were no men, Marie Adelaide succeeded her father, and then her sister.  The Semi Salic law remains on the books.

Yes, por Adelaide. Marlene, what did she die of? Did she ever consider marrying anyone?

She was only 30 when she died . . . I suppose it was that big influenza epidemic in thw 20s. Charlotte lived to be 89!

I was always interested in MA. On another board Marlene told me about the bio and I did order it. It's been awhile but I enjoyed it. It's old and not a really comprehensive look at her but she did die young.

Like QW she was a 'girl' ruler. Ironically Luxemburg was separated from the Netherlands when King William died without male heir. I don't know when/how it was changed for Luxemburg since Duke Wilhelm had 6 girls.

As a side note, CPss Antonia of Bavaria was MA's sister. There's some about her on another thread--she was interred in a concentration camp during WW2.

Marie-Adelaide became heiress presumptive to the throne in Luxembourg in 1907.

There's a bit of information on Marie Adelaide's sisters in the other thred paralel to this one on the Luxemburg Princesses. She seems to me a lonely creature actually... reigned for a short time, unmarried, had to abdicate, was unpopular, spent last years in a convent... Quite a sad, even melancholic creature...

Like I said, I feel so sorry for her.  Did any of her family see her after she became a nun or was she sort of  "shut out" of the family?

I really have no idea, but her sister Charlotte did name her daughter Adélaïde too; had the ex-Grand Duchess been very unpopular or scorned by the family, I think Charlotte wouldn't have done this, but it's just a guess, let's see what the experts say ;)

Did she ever become the prospective bride of anyone, or was anyone suggested as a husband for her? Were her parents as pro-German as she was? What about her sisters, particularly Charlotte? Marlene I know you must have tons of information, won't you share a bit? :)

She was linked, at least in the media, to Prince Heinrich of Bavaria,  an Archduke and at least one other German prince.
