Auerbach of Kiev
(1/1)

My friend has a round china platter, cream colored with a blue floral border, issued by a company in Kiev by the name of Auerbach. A letter from the Hammer Gallery in New York accompanied the plate, stating that it belonged to a Mr. and Mrs. Richard Cramer in 1945, and that the plate "bears the mark of the Russian Palace of Tver where this service was used." I checked the back of the plate and there is an inscription in Cyrillic, tho' rather difficult to discern and not helped by the fact that the plate's underside has many faint scratches and has obviously been used. Any further insights on this? Would the Hammer Gallery have been connected with Armand Hammer? And what/where is the "Russian Palace of Tver"?
Mike:
Janet,
The Auerbach porcelain factory, later acquired by the famous Kuznetsov, was located in Korcheva near Tver, not in Kiev. Among other nice things, they produced the "Tver Service" intended for the Tver Travel Palace.
Look at a map of Russia, and you'll find the city of Tver on a road from Petersburg to Moscow. When the tsars travelled in their horse-drawn coaches between the two capitals, they usually stayed for a night - sometimes longer - in Tver. It was for this purpose that the Travel Palace was built in XVIII c. There are a few images of the palace on this Russian site. Be patient, it's slooooow...

Thank you, Mike! Great information. I'll show your answer to my friend and we'll get out a map. Also look forward to uploading those photos! :)
