Eddieboy_uk -
My reference for the elephant quote is from the Tsarskoe Selo site:
http://www.alexanderpalace.org/tsarskoe/alexandrovka.htmlThere is a decent amount of info there regarding the history of both the Elephant and Llama House, as well as a photo of this poor (and rather large) elephant.
Joanna - Thank you also very kindly for the name of the Tartars that were responsible for the care of this likable fellow.
Re: remains of the Elephant House, according to above source it was constructed in 1828, and was already "decayed" in 1910, so it would make sense nothing was left of it. The true location is likely betrayed by the soil: rich from years of elephant droppings! : )
From that same source, quoted above:
On the road, which leaves Fir Avenue near the Llama House and runs in the direction of the Stolbovaya, is a decayed wooden pavilion decorated with small turrets and surrounded by a square yard with servants' quarters and sheds. This is the Elephant House. The pavilion was built in 1828 by the architect Menelas.
Does anyone know of a photo of the actual Elephant House?
