Eddieboy_uk -

My reference for the elephant quote is from the Tsarskoe Selo site:

http://www.alexanderpalace.org/tsarskoe/alexandrovka.html

There is a decent amount of info there regarding the history of both the Elephant and Llama House, as well as a photo of this poor (and rather large) elephant.

Joanna - Thank you also very kindly for the name of the Tartars that were responsible for the care of this likable fellow.

Re: remains of the Elephant House, according to above source it was constructed in 1828, and was already "decayed" in 1910, so it would make sense nothing was left of it.  The true location is likely betrayed by the soil:  rich from years of elephant droppings!  : )

From that same source, quoted above:

On the road, which leaves Fir Avenue near the Llama House and runs in the direction of the Stolbovaya, is a decayed wooden pavilion decorated with small turrets and surrounded by a square yard with servants' quarters and sheds. This is the Elephant House. The pavilion was built in 1828 by the architect Menelas.

Does anyone know of a photo of the actual Elephant House?

Seeing an animal chained up like this makes me sick.

 :(

I'm with you on this one Laura --- I know that for the "time" the elephant probably was well taken care of - but the

"time" also was when you could go to zoos and see animals cooped up in small, cramped spaces, completely

disregarding the natural element of the animal.

I know that the IF loved animals - but I do bear in mind the horrible pictures of the stags laid out in front of Spala

that the Tsar had shot -- those pics truly make me sick   >:(  -- and I'm one of Nicholas's supporters!   But not in this

respect!

That huge chain on the elephant in the picture is truly horrible. Such intelligent, gentle animals.

I just put up two new pictures of the elephants - one in their house - on the palace site in the Park section.  The two turrets look rater Indian but I imagine it was in the same Gothic style as many of the the of the park buildings.

Не могу понять что это на Ламских прудах за Цесаревичем Алексеем и Императором ? Если это конечно Ламские пруды ? Второе фото точно там на заднем плане слон.
I can not understand that it on Lamskix ponds for Tsesarevichem Alexey and Emperor? If it certainly Lamskie ponds? The second photo is exact there on a background the elephant.

Как не спорил, но придётся согласиться это паромная переправа Детского острова.

As did not argue, but will have to agree it a ferry of Children's island.

Фото сделано с этого примерно места только в направлении острова. Дуб ещё стоит на том берегу на месте, жаль не видно плотины пруда. Сейчас от «Бугровой» аллеи осталось только название, после реконструкции остался только один подъём и спуск.

The photo is made from it about places only in a direction of island. The oak still costs on that I protect on a place, it is a pity not visible dams of a pond. Now from «Bugrovoy» avenues there was only a name, after reconstruction there was only one rise and descent.
