Concerning the engagement and the marriage, I only know that e.g. Maria Alexandrovna, Duchess of Saxe-Coburg wasn´t very pleased as it marked the beginning "of a new social area". My knowledge begins and ends here.

Maria Alexandrovna was a well-known snob! :) Empress Maria Fedorovna gave her support to Tatiana's choice though poor Princess had had to wait rather long for positive decision from all the family.

Could you tell more about this, please? ::) BTW, where did she get to know her husband?

Nice picture, Linnea! Natalia has a great resemblance to both her parents, esp. to Tatiana!!

She really does!

From A Lifelong Passion

KR, diary 28 May 1907
'Tatiana [his daughter] came running to me, very agitated and with tears in her eyes, and whispered in my ear, so her brothers wouldn't hear, that her friend and contemporary Maria P[avlovna] is engaged. Maria wrote to her from Peterhof that her fiance is the Swedish prince, the second son of the Heir, so Maria, who is three months younger than our Tatiana, is going to be married....Let it now be our daughter's turn. But I somehow wouldn't want to let her go abroad. What about Misha?!'

I had posted about Tatiana K's feelings for Prince Bagration and how it was written that she was 'wasting away' for love of him when it didn't seem like they could marry. I can't remember the thread and I thought I'd gotten it out of A Lifelong Passion but it wasn't there.

Tatiana and Prince Bagration

Nicholas gave permission for the marriage and limited the ruling on equal birth to children and grandchildren of the Tsar in the male line.

Marie Coburg was aghast writing to one of her daughters 'Did you hear that Uncle Kostia's daughter Tatiana is engaged to a Caucasian prince Bagration? The first morganatic female marriage in our family. She was simply dying and dwindling away on account of this morganatic love and now it has been sanctioned. A dangerous beginning in our family and the opening of a new social era.'

In fact a new social era began in 1891 when GD Mikhail Mikhailovicth married morganatically Sophie of Merenberg! :) Though Marie Coburg meant female marriages of course...

It seemed that Tatiana really wanted to marry as soon as possible (regarding to diary of her father) ;).
I don't remember if GD Gavriil, brother of Tatiana, mentioned where and how she had meet Prince Bagration...But I'll check out one more time memories of Gavriil.

I don't suppose Catherine carries out any duties at all of course, but has she ever been important after the Revolution, as in: did she keep in touch with relatives? I've never seen a photo of her I don't think, I imagine she keeps out of the way. Does she use the surname Romanov or that of her former husband?

Who is meant by Misha? Did her father want her to marry him (whoever he is)? He doesn´t mean the younger brother of the tsar, does he?

It didn't say anymore but it seemed that he did indeed mean Nicholas's brother GD Michael.

I don´t believe that she was able to take her jewels with her. When they left Russia, the Bolsheviks examined meme Vera´s toys, so I don´t believe that Mavra was able to hide any jewels from them. :-/

Mavra's sister-in-law,Queen Olga was living with her in the early days of the revolution. She was able to send her famous gems out of Russia via the Danish Embassy.First they were smuggled out of the marble palace by a Danish student in a box of books..then  forwarded to Copenhagen. No doubt Mavra took advantage of this opertunity to send out whatever gems could lay her hands on.

I didn´t know this. BTW, if there is somebody who one wouldn´t begrudge this to, it´s Mavra, I think. :)

Marie Coburg had a convenient memory.   :)

Her aunt Maria Nicolaevna took as her second husband Count Grigori Alexandrovitch Stroganoff in 1856.  The morganatic marriage lasted until Maria's death in 1876.

There was a difference. GDss Maria N. married secretly, Princess Tatiana -openly.
