Devonshire House Ball 1897
« on: October 10, 2008, 12:55:02 PM »
A time ago I saw a photo of the Duchess of Teck (Princess Mary Adelaide) in the costume she wore at the Devonshire House Ball in 1897. I thought it would be interesting to post here some photos of the guests in their costumes. Who were there ????

Hi,

I sure hope Mary Adalaide had a good time at the Ball because she died later that year.
She was 'the peoples princess' long before Diana...

The V&A Lafeyette archive is full of fantastic images of the occasion.  There are also a few of the acutal costumes still around - Alexandra's is in the Museum of London, Maud's is part of the Oslo collection that formed the Style and Splendour exhibition and the Duchess of Devonshire's very colourful Zenobia is at Chatsworth.  I'm sure there are many others out there, but those are the ones I can think of offhand.

It seems extraordinary to me that we are still talking about this ball nearly one hundred and twelve years later. Louise Devonshire would no doubt be very satisfied by the 'legendary' status to which her little 'get together' has been elevated!

I have never seen a photograph of Thora in her costume as a Princess of the Elizabethan Period and can not find one on the V&A site. Any suggestions?

I think Affie Junior's helmut makes him look a tad comical, he reminds me of a duck in armour!
