Beautiful pictures, imagine to wear those jewels .
But I think there is something sad about jewels in a montre. They were made to be used, not just lie there and collecting dust in a museum, although it's great that we can see them closely (and almost hypnotized by them). Of course there aren't anyone worthy to wear the french jewels now, but in countries where the monarchy still excist, it should be like here in Denmark: The crown jewels are daily on display for everyone to see, but still in use by the Queen on special occasions.

In the fall of the Second Empire, the Crown Jewels were composed of:
51 403 Diamonds, brilliant cut .
21 119 Diamonds, rose-cut .
2 962  Pearls.
507 Rubis  - 136 sapphires - 250 emeralds.
528 Turquoise  - 22 Opals - 235 amethyst.
500 Other stones.
Or: 77662 stones and pearls..

Stones and gems from the jewels in the crown. Sold at the Ecole des Mines in 1887. Friedel Edmond, director of the school.

- 173 pearls breakthroughs-100 beads smaller - 642 small pearls.
- 46 emeralds balls breakthroughs.
- 16 emeralds from the imperial crown.
- 34 emeralds smaller-177 amethysts Siberia.
- 7 big pink topaz from Brazil-52 topaz smaller.
Either 1249 stones and pearls with a value of 25176, 93 Francs.


In 1887, some stones exceptional (8 and 48 shiny, or 56 stone) were assigned to the National Museum of Natural History in Paris.
The Grand Saphir of Louis XIV ( "Ruspoli" 136 cts).
The Topaz Louis XIV (28.10 carats).
The Diamant-portrait of the Empress Marie-Louise.
The Opal of Louis XVIII (77 cts) .. Surrounded by many brilliant (48).
The Saphir bicolor-diamond-Daffodil- Emeraude of Louis XIV (17 cts).
The Amethyst of Marie-Louise. Remembrance of the ornament for Nitot delivered by the empress.

Either a grand total of more than 9630 stones and pearls.

incidentally, (i tried to find the thread but couldn't) someone posted this foto (taken by Berthaud in 1887) showing a diamond tiara & 2 bandaus idenfiying it as once belonging to the Russian imperial family.    i'd like to correct that:   it was actually part of the french Crown Jewels & never belonged to the Romanov's.   according to morel, it was made by Bapst in 1863, and had been inspired by one owned by the then empress of russia.
