Hmmm...I think Meichen had a nursing train...Strange that even Alicky & Olga wore the sisters of mercy uniform but not Xenia... ???

!

And, Eric, I and many others would appreciate it if on occasion you could referto these royal personages in a little more formal way. All of this "Alicky" and such makes it sound as though she's your relative - and of course, I know that's not your intention. Alexandra Feodorovna was an Empress - and should be accorded the respect of that designation every now and then.

I second that. Empress Alexandra was Alix/Alicky for her family but not for us.

I think using nicknames is a good way to seperate one from the other (especially in families like the Russian where there are quite a few Alexandras). Tsarina Alexandra's name was Princess Alix (The German form of Alice...Her mother wrote that they murdered her name there). But Queen Alexandra was also known as Alix in the family. So Alicky is the family name she was known without contradiction. Also remember that there was another Empress Alexandra Feodorovna (Princess Charlotte of Prussia, wife of Emperor Nicholas I).

Using nicknames is a good way for those who didn't want  to explain exactly what person he/she talks about and thinks that everyone here is familiar with all Royal persons. For me is better to write down a full name (not so difficult) than to name Royals as if they were my friends.

Svetabel is correct.

In a similar manner, it is inappropriate to use 'privately' recognized names of those persons who are no longer among the living.

Well...For some maybe. However since the person is dead I couldn't think he/she would mind. Poor Tsar Nicholas II was reduced to Citizan Romanov once he lost his throne (not to mention trhose who calls him "Nicholas the bloody" in his face). Also in France people call the wife of King Louis XVI as Marie Antoinette and not HM. Queen Marie Antoinette of France.  ???

Xenia seemed less hands on if one compared her to the Empress or her sister Olga (both nurses). More like her Aunt Michen in some ways it seems.  ???

I am actually regarded by most people as being knowledgable enough about the Romanovs to know there were actually two Nicholas and Alexandras.  ;D

My remarks stand - a constant use of nicknames to refer to royals living or dead is at best grating and at worst disrespectful. I didn't say never use them, I said it would be great if you could simply cut down on the constant nicknames.

And, I already explained what Xenia was up to during the war. Perhaps you are unfamiliar with what is expected of officers' wives. They are expected to entertain, be involved with charities, take care of home and children while their husbands are deployed, and any number of other duties. You can't get much more hands on than this, Eric. And, that's what the grand duchess did during the war. What exactly is the basis of your insistance that she was "less hands on"?

I can just comment by observation unfortunately. During the war there are scenes & images of both Tsarina Alexandra, her daughers & Grand Duchess Olga worked in hospitals and even assist in operations (I don't think yiou can get more hands on than this). While others like Michen was less hands on but more on the operational side of things. I didn't see much of Xenia (in photos) working during the war (I assume she was on the operational side as well ?). I didn't say that she didn't work during the war, but it was certainly less visable (as I see it).  ???

As an aside, it is interesting to note that you can see Xenia's (Ksenia) cypher on the side of the train car: a conjoined KA under the imperial crown.

I was just noting Xenia's cypher on the train car. I had never seen or noted any other personal cyphers of members of the Imperial Family on any of the other wartime pictures of trains. Perhaps Xenia was following Marie Pavlovna's lead. Perhaps all of the Grand Duchesses hospital trains were decorated with their patron's cypher.

has anyone come across any references to dogs owned by Grand Duchess Xenia. She is pictured with one onboard the Marlborough and was supposed to have one or two with her in the Crimea and when she left Russia.

Xénia Alexandrovna, Grand Duchess of Russia, sister of Nicolas II (1875-1960).
Letter autograph signed: "Xénia" Petersburg, December 5, 1898, addressed to her aunt, Princess Mary of Denmark, born Princess of Orleans (1865-1909), p. 4 In-4, in English text.
Translation: "Dear Mary, I must quickly send you a few lines, as I am still able, to the extent that I do not know yet when the messenger arrives.
Your photos are simply adorable.
We found them here when we arrived from the prince. We believe exposing a little later when the weather will be better and longer days because if it is too dark it will be horrible.
There is one thing we want to ask you, if it does not upset you do if we lowered some prices because I suspect they are a little too high darling! I remember that you said this summer that we could if necessary. I have never thanked you for your letter Mamma gave me that, if you like-excuse me. It was so good of the review, but unfortunately, only a few hours. I thought it was fine but it is so sad! Oh! It is a cruel loss if for all and especially for her! What chance that we always see the grandparents healthy and full of life. Who could have imagined that we would never reverrions Amama this dear! Mamma returns next week. This will be terrible for the poor Georgie when she goes because it is so long remained with the family this year it feels good only once it becomes part! We spent the whole summer with him, which was very pleasant.
He feels much better and is in good provisions.
If only he could go on like this! We are back for only two weeks and now I expect to see the child come back at any moment! These days are very disturbing! I can not at all imagine what happens in Copenhagen without expensive Amama small! Although things have changed, the sadness has to be great! Poor Apapa! Next Monday, Georgia leaves for Crete! God bless the poor boy. I hope that your beloved Aage is doing well again. So I thought you and Waldemar during this terrible disease! With all my love for you and dear Waldemar. Your beloved Xénia
