In this photo, Princess Lilian wears a collar of gold purchased at Van Cleef & Arpels, which she made nine large bright tie, maybe those of the diadem of the Belgian provinces fully flexible.

I think the big sapphire brooch was in auction catalog..."Fit for a Princess"...
I have just checked my copy of the Sothebys catalogue from the Sptember 2003 sale in Amsterdam of the effects of Princess Lilian of Belgium ( entitled Princess Lilian of Belguim....not "Fit for a Princess").
There is no sapphire brooch big or small indeed no brooch or jewelry of any description in the catalogue (which by the way had 372 lots).
Perhaps Eric you know of some other auction of which you could furnish me the exact details so I can find a catalogue?
To my knowledge Princess Lilian never wore s "big sapphire brooch" she wore a mammoth emerald one (unless chameleon like it has changed colour scince yr earlier postings)  and a sert invisible ruby flowerhead brooch from Van Cleef & Arpels but never sapphires...I look forward to hearing details of this new gem.

I will find it...It stuck in my mind because it was the only piece of jewel in the midst of Dior Courture, Louis Vuitton suitcases & shoes...

A lovely tinted image from the era of Lillian

About the 2003 auctions, i saw a lot of jewelry there. Maybe the sapphire brooch Eric is talking about its this one. It can be found at Sotheby`s archives

This is by far my favorite piece of the auction, a citrine`s bracelet

Lovely pics ! Thanks for showing it. The brooch I saw was the one she wore on her waist in her purple/blue dress. It was a big brooch with a drop.

A rather large cabuchon emerald with pendant, yes. No one knows where it went, all we know is that Leopold,in his blindness what he mistook for love, just gave in easily on this womans every wimp.As a substitute for the sorely missed title of Queen, something this woman had great difficulty with dealing. The whole jewelry department of the House was dispersed to a woman not only strongly dislked for her being a golddigger pur sang, but as the impossible character she was too,the people have never accepted her,she was seen as the one who tackled Leo as the first the best who** would have done, and Leo was so blinded and hated the use of zippers that he fell into the ,oh,give it a name yourself.Later, she had a overpowerring influence on her stepson Baudouin. So much so that it almost seemed as a,well,"unhealthy relation",a coniving old bat she was.So much so,then when Baudouin finally married,Fabiola as one of her first acts as Queen Consort, kicked her about and ousted her from the Palace.Oh,Leo & Lilian went, and so went all the furniture and treasures of the Palace or Laeken Castle as its officially called.
It took Baudouin and Fabiola years to at least get some of it back. She,and Baroness de Vaughan, are the two least liked charcters in Belgium and both did the same

Things were civil until Baudouin was engaged to Dona Fabiola. Lilian started to make trouble since she was not top dog anymore. After the bridal pair went on their honeymoon, they came back to an empty palace. That was pretty nasty, not to mention the selling of the Royal jewels (the major one being Queen Elisabeth's diamond Cartier tiara), which was sold in secret from the children. They never forgave her after that.
