Thank you, Lucien, for clearing up my misconceptions about the smoke bomb. What was it Prince Claus died of? Cancer?

Prince Claus suffered from several illnesses, prostate cancer(late 90's),and Parkinson(since 1991)being the main causes of much suffering. The cancer was operated on in a clinic near Hamburg,Germany,(by an old friend),and innitially that seemed to be succesfull, but as often is the case it was recidive(is that the correct english word for it?).He was committed to hospital several times, and also had a kidney removed,a pace-maker,pulminory problems etc etc.

And furthermore as the Prince suffered from Parkinson, one leading to the other,he passed away due to complications caused by pneumonia combined with Parkinson on sunday october 6th 2002.

HM,the children and their partners were at his side.

Yesterday,oct.7th,HM presented the Royal subsidy for independent Painting at the Municipal Museum,The Hague. This event usually takes place at the Royal Palace,Amsterdam, but that is closed for 3(!)years due to extensive renovation.

The Royal subsidy was initiated by King Willem III to encourage and stimulate young painters, and "nowadays",consists of 6000 euro, and Royal acknowledgement ofcourse......

HM herself is an established artist, and one of her passions is contemperary Art.

and HM during a visit to the Netherlands Antilles after it was hit by huricane Lenny,1999.Obviously,she was too close to the water,so this is what she looked like after that famous "incident",she laughed wholeheardtedly and continued the visit....

It is announced today:

On november 1st and 2nd 2005,Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovitsj Putin will pay a State Visit to the Netherlands.

President and Mrs. Putin will be met upon arrival at Amsterdam Schiphol International Airport
by Her Majesty and HRH The Prince of Orange.

The wreath laying ceremony at the National Monument on Dam Square,Amsterdam will take place immediatly afterwards, followed by a round of talks with dutch captains of industry at the official residence of the Mayor of Amsterdam.

A visit to Tsar Peter the Greats house in Zaandam will be the next port of call.(The Tsar lived here while in The Netherlands as an apprentice on a nearby shipping warf)

In the evening the State-Banquet will be held at Noordeinde Palace,The Hague, attended by other members of the RF.

On the 2nd the President will meet members of the dutch government and parliament, and a government-dejeuner will be offered at the Hall of Knights.Afterwards the visit continues to the International Court of Justice at the Peace Palace,The Hague.

The State Visit will be concluded at Noordeinde Palace that evening.

Note:No State Visits were(originally)scheduled for 2005 due to the extensive festivities, and subsequent tours of the Kingdom
by HM,on occasion of HM Silver Jubilee. This visit is fitted-in as it already was postponed twice before due to domestic "reasons"by Mr.Putin(Beslan was one of the reasons, and before that the hostage of the theatre in Moscow),so let us hope "nothing will happen",and see it postponed again.

Another reason for not scheduling State Visits this year is due to HM having trouble with her knees, she had an operation last year but now another one is nescessary, and if it wasn't for the Silver Jubilee,it would have happened already. But HM decided to go ahead with all festivities and visits as preparations were already completed or advanced and she didn't want to disapoint anyone. The op is scheduled for January 2006 now,and painkillers and HM smile would fool anyone meanwhile.

Originally I intended to write this thread in almost the same manner as the one on Queen Wilhelmina.
But it doesn't appear like that.

One reason being,HM is still very much alive(thank god),so maybe certain facts are in the archieves for the next 75 years.
(I do hope the youngsters among us,will continue this thread by then).......

But the main reason is plain discretion and courtesy, there's the function and the person,HM and Trix, and I admire both,so maybe my opinions/editorials are biased. In the spirit of HM I would like to invite all to give your opinions, views and ask questions on/about Queen Beatrix, and I will try and answer. But!!Keep it nice.Children are especially invited to ask questions about Tatia's,Anna's and my Queen.

I was quite interested in the role HM had in the government crisis not too long ago. This was not widely covered elsewhere, I imagine, so I am going only by what I read is news bulletins. It seems the Queen acutually "ruled" between elections until working coalitions could be established. To me- this was a pefect example of the viability of constitutional monarchy.

Good point Robert.HM is not only our Head of State but a member of the government. She stands above the parties. She is advised by the leaders of all parties and has a unique insight in these parties. It was not just once, but on several occasions,HM was advised the one,but decided the other,as she saw her decision in what would be in the best interest of the Country,as were party leaders are (for a large part-) keen on what is of the best interest of the party, she has the "Eagle's view".What you refered to happened little over 10 years ago,as she preferred an allience between socialists and liberals, keeping the conservatives at arms lenght, and so there was the government with PM Wim Kok,twice, untill 2002.That year was absurd and saw a country in turmoil after the murder of Pim Fortuyn, and his party gaining popularity,
sky-rocketing.That party (LPF)won the elections but could only form a government in a allience. That happened,
only to "blow-up"a few months later,on the very day of the funeral of The Queens husband,Prince Claus!
People were just appalled how that plebs never gave a second of thought to HM at this sad time.HM wasn't thrilled. At All.

That party was an embarresment while fortuyn was alive but became an even bigger nuisance after the elections.Now,3 years after all that, only some rifraf is left, but the party almost ceases to exist.

And this is just one of the parties HM has to deal with, and are invited to advice her. What a job.

There are some, ofcourse, who,by HM acting as she does, say she has to much power, some so-called"critical"reporters,bring up the subject time after time, but the Dutch wouldn't want any change in HM involvement in forming governments. And looking at the political turmoil in the light of recent events,87% is glad she is who she is and does what she does, and has that "guiding hand".

Once, asked about the  "complaint" that she had to much power, she simply referred to the Constitution and Parliament, saying they could alter that if they wished,it was not upto her to decide in that matter. She just plays it by the rules, and expects others to do likewise.HM has the right to be informed and advised, and vice versa, and has made good use of it.

But it is a fact, yes, that since the 1990's HM gained more stature in government matters as subsequent PM's gave her that extra space. She never takes advantage of that, but works within the lines/borders.It works, and very good too,so why repear something that isn't broke?

Politics in the Netherlands,it's not just a two party system here you see, there are almost 20 and most have a seat or several in Parliament, just to prevend mischief I'm only too glad HM has a keen eye on the lads and gals.Several times a year members of Parliament are invited to come and see her at the Palace,MP's call that going to see the Boss, with their partners, same sex or not.Grouped about 15 to 20 at a time, you better make sure you've done your homework,as she has.But these meetings are quite frank and open between them, almost informal.
