Spanish Bourbon Queens

The only unsuccessful (only modern) queen was Isabel II. Maria Cristina (widow of Alfonso XII) was actually quite a successful regent.

I don't think Maria Cristina of Austria was exactly successful actually. For sure she is one of the most respected Queens of her day and even today, but... quite frankly, I don't see how her regency could have been successful if it lost the colonies, had several political crises (which her son inherited) and eventually led to her son's bad education and, thus, to the downfall of the monarchy two years after her death... My consolation is that she did no live long enough to go into exile.

And what about Queen Regent María Cristina de Borbón, Isabella's mother?? She was also not only unsuccessful but unpopular!  So I agree with cimbrio, I don't think we have a good record of Queens and female regents (lets remember Joan the Mad, Mariana of Austria...)

there's divided opinion Isabela La  Catolica. They want to canoniza her, though left wing parties (and others) think it unjust because of the Inquisition and all the business with the Jews at the time... I don't think she was a bad monarch (can't compare her with her namesake nr. 2!), but she's certainly not my type of ideal female monarch... Much prefer Kristina of Sweden or Victoria of GB... Can you imagine Letizia becoming regent one day???
