I wish I could help. I don't think I've seen this one in color. I was lucky enough to purchase it though a few months back.  :D  A nice 11 x 16 print.

I would love to see a colour version since most of the color portraits I've seen of Ella are in more simple dress and would love to see her glittering. I think the tiara she's wearing is her aquamarine one. Lovely.

Found this portrait by Kaulbach. It's b/w but quite pretty though. Love to see this in color. Was it really drawn b/w (charcoal?) or in color?  :) Anyone can help?

Perhaps it was only transferred in Pavlovsk after the Revolution from one of Ella's palaces.  ???

Oh yes he was!  ;) Who knows perhaps KR (and his family) acquired the portrait when Ella became a nun. She was also a close friend of Mavra.

Not that close with Marva...According to Dagmar (in a letter to her son Nicky) Ella was displeased that Marvra made a fuss about succeeding Ella's position in St.Petersburg and made some "not so nice comments".  ;)

The paintings posted are not all by the same Kaulbach, according to my information. The Schloss Museum at Darmstadt has a painting very similar to the one in reply 1, which was painted by Hermann Kaulbach, according to my museum guide. The paintings in replies 6 and 7, however, seem to have been painted  by Friedrich August von Kaulbach, the painter who also painted Nicholas, Alix en their girls in 1903.

"Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig and Princess Alix of Hesse and by Rhine in Italy - 1893"
