Let's discuss the physical appearance of the Stuarts here.

Look at Queen Anne here. She was a VERY attractive young woman, IMO, though apprently a squint made her look somewhat petulant and sulky.

James II MUST have been a good looker when he was young. Judging by his portriats, he was.

On 22nd November 1660 Samuel Pepys went to see Henrietta Maria and her daughters Mary and Henrietta:

"The Queen, a very little, plain old woman, and nothing more in her presence in any respect nor garbe than any ordinary woman. The princess of Orange I had often seen before. The Princess Henrietta is very pretty, but much below my expectation; and her dressing of herself with her haire frized short up to her eares did make her seem so much the less to me. But my wife standing near her with two or three black patches on, and well dressed, did seem to me much handsomer than she"

Sophia of Hanover thought Heniretta Maria was somewhat toothy and ugly, but she was delighted to here Henrietta compare her (Sophia) to her daughter Minette. Sophia took this as a great compliment, since Minette was regarded as Henrietta's prettiest child.

Of the Women:

Mary Queen of Scots (the portrait by Clouet of her as a young girl is breath taking)

Mary Beatrice, as Prince_Lieven says, very Italian looking.

Of the Men:

not really a Stuart, but Charles II's son James Scott, the Duke of Monmouth was very handsome indeed!

Here's a picture:

Bonnie Prince Charlie good looking as a young man before he turned to alchohol and hedonism.

I've always thought that Charles II was the most imposing of the Stuarts. He really looked like a king even more so than his father or brother.

He was past his prime though even at thirty when he ascended the throne.

It was said of Bonnie Prince Charlie that he was 'never quite sober'!  ;D

Charles inherited the very dark, saturine looks of his Medici ancestors . . . not a handsome man, IMO, but a charming and compelling one.

A characteristic of Stuart women was their auburn hair and height - Mary, Queen of Scots was about 6 foot and Mary II was 5"11.

As for the men . . .  Charles II had the very dark looks of his Medici ancestors, while James seemed a little fairer. Henry of Gloucester had brown hair and brown eyes, I think, whereas their sister Elizabeth had dark blond hair.

The Winter Queen had red-auburn hair as a youngster, but in her older years it turned deep brown and she was very pale . . .

Queen Mary Beatrice was very pale, with black or brown hair, and Queen Catherine had a very dark complexion.

Hmm . . . can anyone add anything more interesting?

James I and VI had auburn hair and was of average height.  His wife, Anne of Denmark, was very tall, taller than her husband, and had fair hair and blue eyes.  She also had a very large nose; many of her descendants inherited this characteristic.

Reports on the height of Charles I vary, but he was probably between four feet ten inches and five feet four inches tall.   He had typical Stuart coloring.  His wife, Henrietta Maria, was even shorter than he was, and very dark.  Perhaps to make Charles seem taller, most paintings of him show him sitting down.

Charles II was about six feet two inches tall, which is startling in light of his parents' height; it was probably a throwback to Mary Queen of Scots and Anne of Denmark.  Charles took after his Medici ancestors, and his skin was swarthy.  His wife, Catherine of Braganza, was short, with very short legs; she was evidently not very attractive.  The poet Andrew Marvell referred to Catherine as a goblin; allegedly, when Charles first saw Catherine, he said he thought they had brought him a bat instead of a woman.

Charles II's sisters were short and slight.  Mary of Orange had Stuart coloring but otherwise took after Henrietta Maria; Elizabeth and Minette had fair Stuart coloring.  James II was evidently of average height, and had auburn hair.

Queen Mary towered over her husband, William III.  It was the fashion of the Stuart era to make wax figures of the dead to stand over graves at Westminster Abbey, and apparently generations of kids laughed at the figures of these two, since the height difference was so dramatic.  Eventually, the figures were retired from public viewing.  William III was reportedly hunchbacked as well.

Queen Anne took after the Hydes more than the Stuarts.  Like many of the Hydes, she had a severe weight problem.

Thanks Palatine,

I for one find the tall /small thing endlessly fascinating.

Mary Queen of Scots' mother Mary of Guise was also unusually tall.

Does anyone know about Mary of Modena. Was she tall or small? Was her son tall? Bonnie Prince Charlie was tall I believe.

I think Charles's latin looks must have looked very striking, even if he wasn't handsome. His brother James on the other hand looks very north European. I expect he would sunburn quite easily!

I think - though I can't confirm it - that Mary Beatrice was not unusually tall . . . I couldn't say for the Old Pretender.
