You forget Mary of Guise proverbial height and neck. Guises were giants. How big is he! said Henri III seing a certain dead body. Marie, mother of Mary of scotts is on the record of most tall royals. When Henri VIII pretended her she joked: "I have a too short neck"
Mary Beatrice was very sensual, for : she came from great beauties:  she was daughter of Laura Martinozzi, one of the six beauties of the Mazzarino nieces(Martinozzis and Mancinis) But she reseemed overall Alphonso IV of Este, his father. Medici, savoy, Martinozzi, Mazzarino, Este predomined in her blood over Bourbon or Habsbourg. So that she was a real italian ragazza

Both Anne Hyde and her daughter Queen Anne ended life grossly obese. Queen Mary (II) also put on weight on her return to England, but she was never as large as Anne. As for William, he was noted for his unusual habit of wearing his own long dark hair loose, and without a wig.

Thanks Palatine,

I for one find the tall /small thing endlessly fascinating.

Mary Queen of Scots' mother Mary of Guise was also unusually tall.

Does anyone know about Mary of Modena. Was she tall or small? Was her son tall? Bonnie Prince Charlie was tall I believe.

I think Charles's latin looks must have looked very striking, even if he wasn't handsome. His brother James on the other hand looks very north European. I expect he would sunburn quite easily!

What can I add for now:

Mary Queen of Scots was apparently 6 feet tall. That's tall for a lady NOW.  :)
Mary of Modena was quite tall, with jet black hair, and dark eyes. :) BEAUTIFUL eyes. (which she passed on to her children)
She was strikingly beautiful to boot. ;)

Uh, from what I've heard both Charles II and James II were very tall, heard 6 foot 2 for James and 6 foot 3 for Charles.  :o
James was known to be quite lean.

What gets me is that both their parents were allegedly small, so it seems to be a genetic miracle that they were both so tall. (unless one of their parents was indeed on the tall side!)

Both their grandmothers , Anne of Denmark, and Marie (??) de Medici(??) were quite tall, so maybe they inherited some height from them. ;)

Charles II was quite dark and swarthy. :)  James, in the portraits I've seen, looks very much like his brother except he was much fairer in colouring. :)

Mary II was known to take after her great, great grandmother, the Queen of Scots, both in height and in character.

What else,
James III, or the "Old Pretender" was alleged to have taken after his uncle, King Charles II, and his sister, Princess Louisa was said to resemble her aunt "Minette" (Princess Henrietta Anne). Whether this was in looks and/or character I'm not exactly sure of!

Well, that's it for now, but I'm sure I'll be back.  :-*

I think - though I can't confirm it - that Mary Beatrice was not unusually tall . . . I couldn't say for the Old Pretender.

:)

She was tall, but then again, that could be very subjective. ;)

I would say that too, and I'm a gal.  ;D
Mary Beatrice of Modena is my favourite Queen, not for her looks, but for her character, heart, and kindness.
But her portraits, she really looks sensuous and voluptuous.  :-*

Not neccessarily totally genetic. Both my parents are only average height but I'm about 6 foot.

BTW, I like Mary Beatrice too. Quite apart from her lovely nature, so pretty!  :D

It's just that Charles I and Henrietta Maria were allegedly tiny (like me, haha) so having very tall sons was quite, well, odd.  ;)

Here's a question - did Charles I take after the Stuarts or the Oldenburgs in appearence, in your opinion? And his brother and sister, Henry and Elizabeth - how bout them? Elizabeth had the Stuart auburn hair as a girl, but it darkened, and in some portraits I think she looks quite like Charles - pale and dark haired.

Yes, I've seen that one. Beautiful portrait - have you seen the two portraits of Mary Beatrice and her son, both in riding gear, where they look very alike? I think I posted them somewhere on these threads.

I was looking for portraits one day, and came across it!  ;D

It was painted just before (1672) his second marriage, so I'm just guessing, he wanted to impress. ;) :o
