Sad and very touching... :'(

Wonder where that portrait is right now ? Can you tell me ?

Kunsthistorisches Museum / Vienna
Ich aber breite trauernd aus
die weiten weissen Schwingen,
Und kehr' ins Feenreich nach Haus -
Nichts soll mich wieder bringen.

I found this painting of Elisabeth Wilhelmine in one of my books. There the author says that the painting is located in the Kunsthistorische Museum in Vienna. I've been there, too, but I haven't seen it either. I think there are many paintings in this museum you actually can't see. So I guess, it really is in storage.

Agreed...Museums do periodically change the exhibits. Like the time I went to the Prado in Spain and found some of the paintings had been switched. Another senario may be the painting was lent out... ;)

What are those anecodtes concering Franz II's marriages? I have read about them, if i remember correctly in Castelot's biography about Napoleon I., that he kinda relates Marie Louise's sexual appetite to her father's and hints, that Franz II. basically "killed" these women with his..hmm..behaviour? Is it just an anecdote or were these women literally tired and died or what? :o

You mean sexed to death ? I think that was what they meant. Actually his first and third wife were quite sicklyto begin with . The second one (Princess Maria Theresa of Naples, Queen Maria Carolina's daughter) had too many children in quick succcession. I think she was exhaused by the contant labor. The last one (Princess Charlotte (later changed to Carolina Augusta) of Bavaria) was a fit woman who loved exerise and fresh air. It was natural that she should survive him for many years.

First of all:  ;D ;D ;D

Elisabeth Wilhelmine died of smallpox some days after giving birth to her daughter Louise Elisabeth.
Marie Therese suffered from some illness and had a premature birth.
Maria Ludovica died of tuberculosis.
And Caroline Auguste died aged 81 - childless ... does this mean that Franz lost his "sexual appetite " within the years?  ;)

somehow. This is what Castelot mentions in the connection of Maria Luise as well, who-he says-made Nipperg quite "weary" and in fact he was happy when his -prolonged- duty was "over", since he became exhausted from the "legendary Habsurbg lust"..woooh!

That is why I said Maria Ludovika was sickly and not of strong constitutusion. Maria Theresa  of Naples was a strong woman, but exhusted due to too many childbirths. The last one got away from that fate...

It looks very nice and shows how much family resemblence there always is, the mother of Franz II, who has also Habsburg ancestry looked a bit similar to and also a lot Clementine, the daughter of
Leopold II and sister of Franz.

Does anyone have this or a similar picture in colour? I only know that with the golden crown. There are also some others, but which makes me confused is that they are sometimes identified as Maria Therese and sometimes as her daughter Marie Louise...strange :-X

This portrait is really sometimes identified as Marie Louise and sometimes as her mother :o

I personally suppose, it´s rather Marie Louise than Maria Theresa...maybe a stupid question....but what do others think?

Definitely Empress Marie Louise. She had similar years with her mother, but if you compare that with the portrait above. You can see that she those not have Maria Theresa's full bourbon nose and thick sensual lips (also a bourbon trait).  :)

I've never seen this painting before ...  :-?

Hmm, I don't think it's Empress Maria Theresia, but I don't see any resemblance between the lady on the pic and Marie Louise either ... Did Marie Louise have blue eyes?
