Maybe the sisters look alike ? The portrait of Queen Maria Sophia of Naples was always mislabed as her more famous sister Empress Elisabeth of Austria.

The three Wurttemburg princesses did indeed appear to have similar features especially if you see the Lampi portraits:

Sophia Marie Dorothea, Empress Maria Feodorovna of Russia

Friederike Elisabeth Amalie Auguste, Duchess of Oldenburg

Elisabeth Wilhelmine Luise, Archduchess of Austria

Yes,they did...But I am sure about this portrait as I visited the Eutin Castle 10 days ago...There are many versions of the same portrait hanging in there, from square to oval...

Maybe it is the other sister. I found the three portraits so alike that I could be confused too.

Eric, every portrait in the Castle is identified, just like this one and even printed in some books about the Holstein-Oldenburg family that can be bought in the Castle and area bookstores!

I thought at first that this is indeed Elisabeth until I visited the Castle where various versions of this same portrait hang on the walls...

So,there's no reason not to believe them...why would Eutin Castle have rooms packed with portraits of Elisabeth and not a single one Friederike who was the Duchess?

Here is a link where you can see the portrait of the Duchess of Oldenburg with her husband hanging on the walls in Eutin Castle.

One can see even the same wardrobe as the one in the picture wrongly identified as Elisabeth, wife of Franz II...in Wikipedia entry this portrait is attributed to Elisabeth, while it's her sister Friederike...
