Antonio, thanks for the verification.  I had only read about the filming, but how terrific that you are acquainted with the locations!  And I’m sure all of us offer our condolences regarding 3/11.  One of the many reasons the story of Nicholas and Alexandra appeals to me is that here were two basically very good people—with flaws and prejudices, yes, but typically compassionate and conscientious—who tried so hard to get it right, but nonetheless brought down themselves, their government, and indeed the entire country. So, can we learn from their mistakes?  And can we, in the 21st century, save ourselves . . . from ourselves?  The powder keg that Nicholas inherited had been hundreds of years in the making.  So is the situation now brewing, with even more deadly weaponry than was available in 1914.  Lessons need to be drawn from the story of Nicholas and Alexandra, and of the World War and Revolution that enveloped them.

THANKS so much for your kindness Janet. There is so much truth in your words...May we learn from our  history and our  mistakes not to go through the same terror again...

I have recently purchased the DVD Nicholas and Alexandra. I had forgotten how lavish and exquiste the cinematography was.  Janet Suzman is remarkable as Alix, and she has not lost her radiance in this role with the passing of time.

However I did find it hard to swallow the scene where the Empress refers to Nicholas as a would be murderer if Rasputin is not brought back and Alexis dies.

All in all the movie still moved me with the simplicity of their love and devotion as a family.

With the fall of the Soviet Union and the opening of the archives, I wonder how true to life a new version of this film would be if there ever was to be one.

Louise!

I agree with you.  Can you imagine a merchant-ivory remake?   Years ago I thought it would be a wonderful vehicle for Meryl Streep as Alexandra and I always thought Kevin Spacey might do a good job as nicholas (though I would prefer an actor with finer features!).  And can't you see Ian McKellan as Rasputin? (Though he may be tired of wigs and beards at this point.)

I think Annette Bening would be fabby as Alexandra -- and at least there's a chance that she might be interested if anyone ever made such a movie.  From all accounts, her husband has been interested in Revolutionary Russia and the Romanovs ever since he made Reds....

As for who could be Nicholas....Hmmm.... That's a hard one.  In that age group, I like Tommy Lee Jones a lot -- but he's got the wrong face.  And Viggo Mortensen is finer-featured -- but he's way too hot to be Nicky.  ;D

It's a conundrum!

About who could play Nicholas, dont forget he was very very short. So Im thinking Matthew Broderick, maybe Michael J. Fox (if he's well enough).

Haven't seen "Revenge of the Romanovs"--the interview with Shulgin sounds fascinating!

I would love to see a film re: Nicholas and Alexandra that makes use of the actual locales, especially that of Livadia Palace. However, I am still attached to the performances given by Janet Suzman and Michael Jayston in the 1971 film. They were truly remarkable, in my opinion.

Oh no, not Meryl Streep! She may be a fine actress, but I don't at all see her in that role.

Annette Benning? Well, perhaps. Would never have considered her, but she might be good actually.

Hmmmm...I love fantasy casting!

Off the top off my head I would say Joan Allen as Alexandra F, I think she is just a fantastic actress.  Michael Kitchen as Nicholas II, he has the necessary gravitas for the role; maybe Christian Bale as GD Dmitri?  Sean Bean as anyone simply because I worship at the altar of Sean Bean.

Curses to you all  :), now I will spend the rest of day trying to think of a proper Rasputin, et. al.

Speaking of fantasy casting, maybe Sean Connery is available. (Never say never again)Would be a great Tsar! Has the looks!
Or should he go for the part of Rasputin?  ;D

I've got another one. Anthony Hopkins as Count Witte!!!
If we go on like that, we could make a rather good film!

Dame Judi Dench, as Alix, she could choose her own Nicky.

Ha ha ha. Judi Dench is a fabulous actress, but as Alexandra? Oh my God, no. She was a good Queen Victoria. She'd be much too old for the part anyway  ;D
