Which of Prince Menshikov's sons was granted the Order of Saint Catherine by Peter the Great? I suppose that it would have to be Aleksander Aleksandrovich but I would not have expected him to marry and produce so many children.

Alexander Alexandrovich M. received the St. Ekaterina, (1st rank) Order on 5 February, 1927.

Notably the only male to receive this female order. It was given to him because Peter the Great believed that A.A. had a "shy feminine character".

The family and the descendants of His Serene Highness A.D.Menshikov

By Andrey Narbut (Russia, Moscow)

Alexander Danilovich Menshikov (6.11.1673- Berezov, 12.11.1729), is one of the most famous persons in the Russian history. He was born in unknown family to become the favorite and the nearest helpmate of Peter I and Catherine I, became count (1702), prince, His Serene Highness (1707), admiral and generalissimo (1727). The family of Their S. Highnesses Menshikov ceases with the death of His S. Highness Vladimir Alexandrovich (1815 - 1893). Their estate, name and title pass to nobleman Ivan Nicolaevich Koreysha, perished in 1918.

A. D. Menshikov had 7 children, 4 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. From four great-grandchildren four branches of descendants have arisen:

1) "noblemen" (44 descendants: Their S. Highnesses Menshikov, Vadkovskiy, Bostelman, Erukhmanov, Kornilovich et al.);

2) "Gagarin" (43 descendants: princes Gagarin, Petrovo-Solovovo, princes Urusov, Sheremetev et al.);

3) "Golitsyn" (122 descendants: princes Golitsyn (54), czarevichs of Georgia, princes Kurakin (36), Plautins et al.);

4) "Trubetskoy" (207 descendants: princes Trubetskoy (55), princes Obolensky (55), princes Gagarin (37), princes Gorchakov, Bibikovs et al.).

On the whole there were discovered 438 descendants of His S. Highness A.D.Menshikov. Descendants of M.V.Lomonosov and generalissimo A.V.Suvorov, and also generals and statesmen, generals, admirals, senators, governors and others are among them

The sisters of Menshikov were Marie, Tatyana,  Anna and Praskovia. Anna married an adviser of Peter the Great Anton Devier. The others married aristocrats.  Marie married Alexei Golovin  whose brother was an admiral for Peter and who did finances for the royal family.  Tatyana married perhaps 7 years later, Ivan Kalinovich Pushkin according to estimations around 1710 or so.  He  was a steward of  Praskovia, the wife of Peter's half brother, Tzar Ivan.  Praskovia, married Alexei Ivanovich Dashkov who was a diplomat, and later ambassador to Turkey and a  Privy Counselor. They might have married 4 years later, around 1707 or earlier  when he was in his  thirties.

Also he might have had a brother Gabriel, but no one knows if this was his brother or first cousin. His father Daniel was a groomsmen. His family was from around Minsk. They were brought to Moscow in the war with Tzar Alexis.
