"Summer Day is Done" by R.T. Stevens

I wanted to recommend this as a book that I have a great fondness for. It is a novel with a very sympathetic portrait of the Imperial family-though-it -as with most of these novels-takes some license with the facts.

It is based around a mythical romance between Olga and a British soldier-but the family atmosphere is very convincing to me. It is the sort of book that haunts you and lingers in your memory. Of course, I first read it as a teenager and I think this may play a part in my affection for it.

I read it a while back.   Liked it much more than the Snow Moutain.    Would love to get another copy to read again.   It almost took you to the long days with the family.

I thought this was a lovely book and certainly faithful in spirit to the way the IF probably was. Definitely worth reading (I still have my original copy).

Michelle-there are many cheap used copies-paperback and hardback-on Amazon.com.  I just bought a hardback as my paperback has seen better days. I originally read it from the library as a teenager-but picked it up years later from a used bookstore.

I don't think you will regret picking this one up. It is the best fictional book-or among the best. IMHO. The fictional love story is sweet and believable and doesn't detract from my conception of Olga at all.  The last paragraphs always make me sigh!

Two ways to get older books - try Amazon.com - they have a terrific used book service - other than that, I've gotten alot of my Romanov collection via Ebay - not as convenient as Amazon, but a good resource for more obscure titles.

In addition to Lisa´s advice i would highly recommend bookfinder.com. It served me to find a lot of extremelly rare books in several languages.

I adore this book, but warning, it's a bit of a tear jerker.  The scenes with the British young man and the children are just too sweet for words.  Very innocent.  They probably weren't quite that innocent, but it is how I like to think of them.

MUCH better than Snow Mountain.

And, yes, FICTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Who else has read this one?

I did.  I enjoyed it though thought it was too sweet and childish, at least with the children, but it was cute. :)

...yes, but there are some schools of thought that say the children were "childish" even unto the end....

I love Romanov fiction. I think "The Summer Day is Done" is one of my absolute favorites. If one doesn't like it, it's a matter of personal taste, but I did like it!

How interesting!  I haven't heard of this book until now, sounds like another one to add to my list.  Thanks, Ilana!  :D

It was a nice light read - the Romanovs are portrayed very sympathetically - much more like the impression one gets of them from various memoirs than is presented in other fiction (like the Snow Mountain for example).
